With salary retention it wouldn't be a problem (see Mez at the deadline last year).

We would have had a tough time being able to fit him in the cap heading into the season if he didn't sign this current deal.

Spending up to the cap ceiling, hand out all available contracts, and then later trying to sell for cap relief is not exactly a smart strategy... it means we are in cap hell again and every potential trade partner knows that.

It's either were are happy with what we got and don't want a major overhaul or Hextall is no smarter than Holmgren and hand-cuffed himself with that move!

I'm not against the contract in general - I just hate the timing!

Makes sense to keep him at a reduced cap hit while the d prospects develop. Very pleased.

Hope one of Alt, Haag or Ghost are on the line up for him to mentor. This deal for Kimmo is ****ing fantastic. Only negative is IF Luke , Gross and Kimmo are all in the line up, that is still 3 SLOW D men.

Still think the D get a tweak like to see Alt or Ghost in there if they impress at camp.

Yeah, I'm not convinced at all that this is close to the final product on D. I believe the reports that Hextall wants to change things up.

I agree that Timonen, Streit, and MacDonald are the only safe ones. Coburn isn't going to be available, but I'm sure he'll listen to offers.

At least one of Grossmann or Schenn will be gone.

Really? So a player makes up his mind to play somewhere because of the GM? Only busting them. Guess Homer bringing Hexy back was a good thing then huh?

I think Ghost is on the bench come October, Grossmannnn gets moved out and we'll see one more addition to the back end.

Welcome back Kimmo!!

I thought that Ghost had the inside track but now with Timonen, Streit and MacDonald returning this defense would be way too small and soft with him cracking the roster

At least Alt and Hagg may still get a good look

Yep. I did not want Kimmo back if it was going to cost us big time. For that price I will take it.

IMO...

Voracek is a very good deal.
Mason is a good deal.

Talbot was a good deal at 1.75m.
Coburn was signed a 1.3m 2 year deal in his best days.
If you look beyond his massive injury issues Lupul's contract was good given the numbers he can run.

Love the guy (even considering his decline) and like the deal. Hexy is the man

You never know. Ghost is a pisser to play against. Amac is not soft but Luke is our leader as far as toughness goes. So far I give Hexy good marks for his moves to date and you just know he is not done as far as the backend goes.

The Talbot deal was especially terrible. THere is a very, very clear formula in the CBA for how much salary can dip per year and he still blew it.

When I read the news my first thought was "The thread will turn into Hextall vs Holmgren almost immediately...". And I was right

My guess is that you are young and believe that a player of Kimmo's quality can be replaced easily...
