Little bit OT but not really, but I'm pretty excited and I think there's no better group to share this news with than with you guys.

I got a job writing for a website as a Florida Panthers writer. The pay isn't insane or anything, but it's a step in the right direction.

Congrats, could you not become a partner with HF so you could post your articles here?

Indeed; sorry JonathanHuberdoh, but you have to be a partner to promote the site you mentioned. Below is a link on how to become one:

Grats on the job though.

Ebola to the USA

Ebola, brought here to the US...on purpose. I don't know why. Any medical professionals round here?

I'm scared that not only are we in danger of losing hockey, but life as we know it.

Mods please don't close, have some decency. This is not something political (I hope), nor is it something that should be brushed under the rug.

The doctor, that should've been educated enough to take all proper precautions, contracted this horrific virus.

What do they plan on doing with a disease that has no cure? When the human dies, the disease doesn't. Where will they dispose the bodies?

Again, I ask if any of you are medical professionals, and why in sam hell would this be allowed?

...if we can talk about fantasy football, leave something actually important open for discussion.

I urge non Panthers boards mods to leave the decision making to Panthers boards mods.

The hospital said in a statement Thursday that the unit, set up in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is designed to treat patients exposed to serious infectious diseases. One of only four such facilities in the country, “it is physically separate from other patient areas and has unique equipment and infrastructure that provide an extraordinarily high level of clinical isolation,”

I don't see the problem.

the symptoms are so trivial that you usually don't realize that you have contracted the infection, and thats whats really really scary

“It’s not the common cold. It is not the flu. It really requires exposure to blood and bodily fluids,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and senior associate at the UPMC Center for Health Security.

And basic hygiene at the emergency room door or in the clinic should prevent spread there. Any U.S. intensive care unit can do it, Frieden said. “We work actively to educate American health care workers,” he said. “There is nothing particularly special about the isolation of an Ebola patient, other than it is really important to do it right.”

While hospitals in West Africa have become “amplification centers” for Ebola, that wouldn’t happen in a country with modern facilities, Frieden said. “We have strong systems to find people, if there is anyone with Ebola in the U.S. … to isolate them and to provide follow-up.”

I'm not that concerned.

We already have an OT thread for general talk about, well, basically anything that's within site rules. Fantasy football has its own thread because the communication would get buried/lost within other posts here.

Of course, if this becomes a more serious threat, we'll have an own thread about it.

I don't know if I missed a sarcasm icon here as the disease itself is an awful one and I wouldn't make a joke about it myself, but:

Life as we know it... Even the worst diseases, pandemics in the world have had only modest effect on human population. The worst pandemic in the recorded history being the 1918 Spanish flu, killing 40 million people according to some estimations. More people died in a year than in four years of Black Death Bubonic Plague in 1347-1351.

On top of that, there usually aren't cross species pandemics. And in no scenario there can be a pandemic that effects "all life as we know it".

Basically a plague can wipe out 50% of population in some cities, Influenza pandemic can wipe out 20% of the world population in a worst case scenario.

Ebola has killed 1000 people, and propably will kill another few thousand, if people don't get it that they shouldn't be moving the dead bodies without protective gear when the bodies are covered in blood.

I'm just saying you shouldn't be afraid about the life as we know it. At least about Ebola being the reason.

CNN ran the headline "Coming to America" about the ebola virus...
Is it bad that all I could think about was Eddie Murphy?

Ebola can only be spread through bodily fluids and blood, it's common in Africa because they use the same water to bathe that they use as a bathroom, reuse needles in hospitals, and don't handle the bodies while wearing appropriate equipment. If it was "unleashed" in North America, you would pretty much just have to avoid using public pools, we have a clean water supply and proper equipment.

My $.02 - never answer a question unless you know why they are asking. As someone who interviews potential candidates - EVERY question has a reason why it's asked. If that reason isn't readily apparent to you, you are 100% better off to ask clarifying questions until you are certain than just make your best guess.

Were we supposed to just let the doctors die lol? Plus as has been said, the chances of an "outbreak" are pretty much zero. Its not like Hollywood. Even in Africa ebola as deadly as it is barely makes a dent in the total population.
