According to Bob McKenzie on twitter, EDM just traded for Nikita Nikitin's rights. No word yet on what CBJ receives.

EDM has acquired negotiation rights for Nikitin, per Bob Mc on twitter.

I'm guessing a conditional pick. Probably a 7th rounder if he doesn't sign, 4th or 5th if he does sign.

I guess this signals the team's intentions regarding whether or not they were planning to bring Niki6 back...

It's probably the only thing "consensus" will be right on all summer.

solid at times...he's a decent 4/5 defenseman with a good shot when he's on...when he's off, he's a 6/7

Odds are, NN's asking price was too high and Jarmo just didn't have much of a reason to re-sign him with us having a couple of young D-man coming up.

Hopefully this means we'll see more of Erixon?

VinnyC - remember it was JD who helped send Niki6 here from StL...he wasn't a fan of him, so I don't think any of us are really shocked we aren't bringing him back now

Perhaps a bigger deal in the works? Umberger?

Clarification: EDM has window in which it's permissible to negotiate with CBJ pending UFA Nikita Nikitin, but no trade has yet been made.

I don't think we can necessarily infer that. Executives trade players they like all the time. Unless there was a quote from JD that I missed, I don't think we can say that he didn't like Nikitin.

He seems to play better when paired with another Russian.

Howson probably learned his lesson about making a trade before finding out if someone actually wants to come to your franchise.

Good. He was the clear odd man out. Makes some room for Erixon.

This is weird. Wonder what type of compensation we'd receive if he actually signed with them?

Has anyone heard of obtaining the negotiating rights without an actual trade like this before? Is this just the Jackets allowing the Oilers to see if he'd be up to signing before actually trading his rights?

Some tool of a fan on TSN in the comments section called this a "bold move". Really? rofl

I am verry happy with this trade. We are getting something for someone we most likely weren't going to bring back and it opens a spot for one of our young defensemen.

#CBJ don't have a 5th-round draft pick. #Oilers have two, including No. 137 ... which they acquired from #CBJ for Nick Schultz in March.

give us our pick back...

Very similar to the sign and trade deals you see in the NBA. If that is indeed the type of deal this is, for the NHL, it would be considered a bold move. Maybe Jarmo has a deal for a player that might be of use to us. Maybe he approached it that he would permit exclusive negotiating rights for a period of time before July 1 in exchange for a larger piece coming back if a deal is closed with Nikitin, instead of the obligatory draft pick that may or may not help. MacTavish may be the brains behind this as well. This may end up being interesting.

We haven't gotten anything yet. It was already reported by AP that he wasn't coming back or, more accurately, that he wasn't on the list of pending FA's that we were negotiating with.

No surprise here.

Still wouldn't call it "bold".

There seems to be more to this that Nikitin heading over to Edmonton. It is unusual in the NHL.

What if this is apart of something bigger about to happen between the CBJ and EDM? Nikitin could be apart of a package sent to EDM for, say, Eberle or Perron...but the Oilers won't sign off on the trade unless they know that they can for sure sign Nikitin. Thoughts?
