Ray Sheppard likes him!

@razr26: Great decision by @FlaPanthers. Former teammate, character guy, very good with younger players. Should be a good fit here.

I've heard that Gallant is a player's coach, someone who they all like and admire. I think if FAs asked their buddies who have played for Gallant what they thought of him, they'd probably give positive feedback.

As far as Disco Dan, I've read on the Pens board and elsewhere that DB didn't have control of the locker room, and that led to a lot of the frustrations and problems the team had.

Ill get excited when the panthers are actually putting their money where their mouth is and start announcing player acquisitions that can play on the first line.

From GR:

"Dale Tallon on Gerard Gallant: This is the guy we wanted. It was an extensive search which was very informative and successful".

So does this put the "OMG PANTHERS ARE SO CHEAP WOW" comments to rest?

@CassieCampbell: Happy for Gerard Gallant. New head coach of Florida who had a bigger role in MTL than most people think #pei

HNIC panelist weighing in.

I'm super happy it wasn't Bylsma. Also the main reason Tallon hired Gallant is because the double L's of course.

Little blast from the past with Gallant playing and Tallon commentating.

Overwhelming positive reviews so far...

From what I have seen in Twitter from those ex-players, players, analysts, journalists, etc.

Also, most responses from Habs fans have been also positive about him and negative about his loss for Habs. Take a look at TSN page below for fan comments...

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=455395#YourCallTop

Had to laugh at one comment from Habs fan wishing GG good luck & saying we got a good one but then lamenting that now they are stuck with Therrien "who is not 1/2 the coach" that GG is.

While I don't know about that, and I originally wanted Bylsma, I like what I read about his enthusiasm and ability to work with young players.

The coach is only as good as the players that play under him. Ownerships turn to put money where mouth is.

Welp, after the wait and the hype I'd have to say this hire is a flop. Probably just ownership wanting to save $$$

3 more years of mediocrity loom

Guess his nickname is Turk. I like it, I'll probably start using it on here.

Can we give the guy at least through December??

The only people that would call this hire a failure at this point are those who were heavily invested (either emotionally or intellectually) with any of the other candidates or those who wanted a "NAME" coach.

I have NOT seen one knowledgeable hockey person tweet or speak ill of this hire and I know it has just been announced.

As far as Bylsma, I do believe he was offered because he was one of the 4 head coaches that I think Tallon had on his radar (Tor coach, SJ coach, and Laviolette being being the other 3).

I think it was a combination of $ AND term when it comes to Bylsma. I think he probably wanted certain guarantees in terms of length. DT and ownership probably thought these assets could be better spent elsewhere and I would agree if that's the case.

Are you under the impression that Quenneville or Babcock were available for us to go after? We had a fairly skinny pool from which to draw. GG was, by all accounts, the X's and O's guy for a team that just made the eastern conference finals. He's well liked and respected. He's a great communicator. While your well thought out rationale for why this hire is a "flop" was certainly a fascinating read, how bout we give him more than 30 minutes of tenure before declaring our impending doom?

I can tell by reading your comment that you haven't read a single comment in this entire thread, or ANYTHING about Gallant for that matter.

Because the guy who played Jarome Iginla out of position in favor of Pascal Dupuis and whose team was a complete failure in the Olympics (and not to mention every NHL year after 2009) was the right choice, despite the hefty salary demands.

Just because you have the money doesn't mean you should spend it all willy-nilly.

Satisfied with this but echo others who say we need player acquisitions for really anything to be meaningful. Look forward to draft, hopefully a couple trades and then the first week of July will be very telling.
