Callahan looks like he won't be heading to FA:

Quote:
Ryan Callahan is on the verge of signing a long-term extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Sportsnet has learned.

The 29-year-old was eligible to pursue unrestricted free agency on July 1, but a source indicated that a new deal with the Lightning is “imminent.” While the precise terms of the extension weren’t immediately available, it is believed to be in excess of five years and worth as much as $5.5-million per season.

Scott Bartlett, one of Callahan’s agents, tweeted on Tuesday night that the sides had found “common ground towards a new deal.”

Callahan earned $4.825-million last season. The former New York Rangers captain was dealt to Tampa at the trade deadline after failing to negotiate an extension that would have kept him in Manhattan.

He put up 11 points in 20 regular-season for the Lightning, bringing his total to 36 points in 65 games on the year.

Once his signing is completed, Tampa will send a second-round draft pick to the Rangers to finalize the trade. The Lightning also received two first-round picks in the deal and sent former captain Marty St. Louis the other way.

In 470 career games for Tampa and New York, Callahan has 138 goals and 265 points.

It's pathetic because it's absolutely disgusting and violates everything about the ethos of sport.

If you can't pay your hydro bill, so you decide to jump in front of an unsuspecting car and then fake an injury to get money from a lawsuit ... you're pathetic. This is no different. Earn things the right way.

The NHL needs to open up the lottery even more to kill the neverending, nauseating discussion of tanking from fans.
I don't know if I'd go that far. Sure, in principle, it's ludicrous, but you can't really blame someone for doing it if a system is put in place to not only encourage/reward it, but have no recourse or even attempt to frown on it when it's done intentionally.

That to me is the big difference between this and jumping in front of a car to collect royalties (other than the obvious financial devastation of the driver, which REALLY breaks the analogy). The league needs to get their act together, but the teams that take advantage of such a wide open and welcomed hole in the system are only doing their due diligence, IMO. If steroids were openly legal and beneficial, I wouldn't consider people who use them scum either. I'd just consider the league a farce. I feel similarly about what the Pens did.

Yeah, as long as in any given year there aren't more than 3 teams trying to tank for 1st OA. Some of these terrible teams are terrible by design, but that's a fair point.

2 yrs/$9M for Nikita Nikitin, who played on Columbus 3rd pairing last year

Gotta love that "please live in our crappy city!" tax the Oilers have to pay...

Lightning use compliance buyout on Ryan Malone. Perhaps few of these still to come.

The best part is he signed him right before he has to re-up Petry and Schultz. Can you say payday! Schultz and Petry are both better than Nikitin...

It's really easy to fix. The bottom 5 teams go into an equally weighted random draw. Is a 20% chance of the 1OA worth tanking and alienating your fans for?

Nikitin also doesn't speak English and isn't interested in learning. Should be loads of fun for him in Edmonton when the only guy you can talk to is Nail Yakupov. On the other hand, it would be a pretty sweet deal to pull in $4.5M/yr and not have to talk to any reporters.

Chicago? If they're interested in Kesler they could be in the fold for Spezza..

I've read that Minni is very interested in Stastny so it could be them as well.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have scheduled a news conference for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, where they are set to name Mike Johnston as their next coach, according to multiple media reports.

TSN's Darren Dreger states Johnston will receive a three-year contract.

Glad to hear it. Johnston is a great coach and he'll do well in Pittsburgh. I wonder if he asks Travis Green to join him as an assistant?

I think St. Louis is the best fit too. For some reason I can picture him in that jersey already...

This is absolutely what they should do. I have no idea why the NHL even bothers with a lottery that only affects the 1st overall. It's not like a team won't tank because they might end up with 2nd overall.

There should be no perverse incentive against winning even the final regular season game.

Yep, I was going to post exactly this although it'd be less than 20% odds since teams ranked 6-14 would still have a crack at 1st overall too. Using this year's odds it'd be about 15% per team in the bottom five.

I'm guessing they might be a major player for any goalies in the market like in the last trade deadline.

If Green gets hired in Portland and Gulutzan takes the head gig with the Giants (or vice versa), it'll be interesting to see who Benning and Desjardins look at to fill those roles, apart from Lidster.

Didn't somebody mention Perry Pearn a few days ago?

Yeah, his name has been circulating for a while. Good chance he lands here with Desjardins.
