Possible, but I'd hate to see him go. I want the farm to actually have some continuity behind the bench for once.

Yeah, I think any such system should allow for no incentive to lose any game at any point in the season. Given how league revenue is still mainly ticket-driven the last time I checked, it only makes sense.

Why would he go from the AHL back to the WHL? Less money, less likely to move up to the NHL, etc. That would be a very strange decision for a guy who jumped at the opportunity to move up to the AHL.

Well he'd be GM and coach instead of just coach as before. Anyways just repeating twitter rumors, could be nothing.

Not sure. I know Rick Tocchet also got hired as a assistant in Pittsburgh today and he mentioned Travis Green being a good buddy of his and how he would often talk to Green about Johnston and his system etc. Seems like they could all co-exist pretty well in Pittsburgh.

I'm tempted to quote Sean Avery.

How is it that the three greatest players in NHL history don't have an award named after them yet Mark Messier - a player who never tasted the playoffs in his last 7 seasons- has an award for leadership?

It's a joke.

They are going to regret the term.

Won't matter if they win another Cup or two.

The term is the only reason they were able to sign him though; necessary evil to make the cap work.

No penalty on new contracts after the CBA, so he can retire whenever he wants

Yeah - but they are starting to accumulate bad contracts. Richards, Gaborik. What is Justin Williams going to ask for next year with a Conn Smythe under his belt? Does Willie Mitchell hit free agency or do they offer him term as well?

It's basically the Stanley Cup premium, but it's going to cost them in the future.

For a win now team, that is actually winning now, worrying about 4-5 years down the road is probably futile in my opinion. They should be doing everything they can to maximize their chances of winning over the next few seasons and re-signing your Cup winning, playoff leading goal scorer had to be done.

I do agree there have been missteps though, I just don't think the Gaborik contract is one of them. Richards should have been bought out, no doubt in my mind, that could cost them Williams.

I don't really see much downside to that Gaborik contract even with the long term. It's a ridiculous cap hit for a player of his caliber and he's still only 32. The last few years are probably garbage years as usual to drive down the cap and with the new CBA I don't think his contract is eligible for any recapture penalties. Worst case scenario is he gets injured and lives on LTIR like Pronger which only costs them real $$ not cap.

So....... Basically the ENTIRE cap recapture penalty was just to punish the Canucks and luongo contract..... WTF.

(and a couple others)

There could be cap recapture if they structured it differently. I think the lowest year can't be less than half of the highest year or there's recapture, or something like that.

Sure seems like it. Brian Burke, the gift that keeps on giving. The most ridiculous part of the whole thing is that if the original Luongo to TOR deal went down then the Cap Recapture clause wouldn't even exist.

What a terrible team! Changes are needed!

No don't make those changes that we know nothing about or how they will fit in 4 months from now!

Not my favourite names either but some guys are going to have to be signed.

This is my belief. So glad Burke lost his job in Toronto over that entire debacle. Not the Luongo situation, the team. 18-wheeler right off the side of a cliff, how do you spell that long German word again?

A. What an *******
B. I can't believe the players and GMs all let that rule go in retroactively
