Next In Line?

Just had a hunch as to who we'd bring in if Ulf Samuelsson were to leave for an HC job elsewhere. Would Dan Bylsma be a good choice? Who do you think could take Ulf's place as AC if he so happens to decide to leave?

Also maybe we can discuss a future GM position as well. If Gorton was to not be the next GM, who would take over for Sather?

There's no possible way Dan Bylsma would take an AC job. None.

Send a message via AIM to Hire Sather
Isn't he an offensive coach anyway? Not what we'd be looking for in a replacement for Ulf.

that's nonsense. Jacques Martin has been an NHL head coach since 1986, a GM, has a jack adams and then this year took an assistant job in Pitt. What makes you think Bylsma wouldn't? there's only so many HC gigs..

I.E. I'm not overly enthusiastic of Beukeboom as I don't think the best candidate for the job is likely to come from the very limited pool of "hockey coaches that won the Stanley Cup as a player in 1994".

Also, I think Bylsma would be a terrific asset to this team. The X and O part of his coaching is great, but his ability to pick a lineup or manage his team psychologically leaves a lot to offer. But since the latter two falls squarely on the HC, they won't be an issue if Bylsma is an AC.

Bylsma would be a terrible choice because it would make Vigneault paranoid and create a controversy if the team struggles.

Plus, Bylsma want a lengthy contract with lots of money. He isn't getting that as an assistant.

Either fire AV and hire Bylsma or don't hire Bylsma at all.

There is no in between. If Bylsma doesn't get a HC gig, he'll hit the booth.

Bylsma's smart. He knows a team will start out 3-10 and the fan base will be calling for the coach's head.

That's when he'll get the money and term he wants.

They'll want someone to run the D and that's most likely Beukeboom.

I don't know if Torts would click very well with Alain, two complete opposite personalities and different view at the game.

Ulf Samuelsson is a defensive coordinator. I do not believe Dan Byslma is of any sort a specialist in this field. If hes available and simply wants an assistant coaching job, then sure. He is very well qualified. However, Dan B has more of a chance to land a head coaching gig than Ulf

Jeff Buekeboom seems like the best fit. Stay within the organization. He knows Alain well now. He knows our AHL and prospects. He started off slow with them but they finished well.

Why not

Bylsma likely didn't get the head coaching job in Florida because he wanted too much money, as he'll get over $4 million over the next two years from Pittsburgh if he's not working for another club.

So yeah, he's not taking an assistant's job. Consider that Arniel is already associate coach, so it would really be third in command.

My first thought was actually Torts haha him and AV would just have to stand on opposite sides of the bench. AV for offense and we don't lose Tort's defense

its too bad they couldn't because AV running the office + torts running the defense...

imagine the (positive) possibilities of that! lol

A lot of AV's offensive philosophy stems from defensemen jumping into the play and keeping it alive, which obviously directly contradicts Torts' defensive scheme. Not only would it fail on the personalities front, but their strategy differences are just as damning.

Vancouver and Pittsburgh went in another direction. Is there any place else for Ulf at this point?

Considering Carolina named their HC already, I think he's staying put.
