They're not going to have even an opportunity to get a chance with our current contracts.

And we want to bring Gionta back too?

Great. No cup for another 3 seasons.

There were no other options. It was Niskanen or Markov.. and no guarantee that we can sign Niskanen. It wouldn't have been wise to bank on that and let Markov go either. Other option was a trade, and again, no guarantees. Besides, we can still sign Niskanen and/or make a trade to improve our D.

Personally, I hope that we improve our top 4 and that Markov plays a bit of a reduced role at 20-22 minutes average throughout the season. Then you could see an actual increase in his performance with fewer minutes.

Gorges is the one who should go.

Awesome news. back-end needs some work but Markov is definitely not part of the problem.

Problem is that Emelin is being paid like a top 4 Defenseman

Nice. Good deal IMO.

His impact on this team goes much deeper than scoring. He provides stability on the blue line, he's a veteran that others look up to, he can play hard minutes if he has to. And he's also important to the development of Emelin I think. Being in a foreign country and having a buddy there that you can relate to makes a huge difference in your mental game, so Markov and Emelin together is good for the team as a whole.

I'm happy with this deal. I'll also remind those who aren't happy how upset they were last time he signed the same contract 3 years ago, and he more than exceeded expectations. He's stayed healthy and he's played how we want him to play.

If someone's worried about his age, realize that he's spend the last 5 years re-habbing and working on two torn ACL/MCLs - keeping in shape until he's 38 is a walk in the park compared to re-building a knee twice in his mid-30s. I'm not worried about his condition at all.

Alright. I was hoping for a 2 year deal but he's still worth it.

Because getting rid of Markov makes the Habs automatic Cup contenders, right?

The bottom line is that he is still very much needed by the Habs. Hopefully some of the prospects go into developmental overdrive though.

I don't think Markov will ever be a problem. He's at least top 4 for next year and probably the year after that. In the 3rd year he can still be a bottom-pairing D that you use on the PP, which is maybe not worth 5.75M but is still useful.

I think the problems will be Emelin and Gorges at 4M a piece.

Ideally, after this season you can see our LD's set up as:

Tinordi
Markov
Beaulieu

and jettison Gorges+Emelin for some RD help.

Good! Now all we have to do is resign Arthur Weaver and trade Emelin and sign one of Stralman or Niskanen and our d looks pretty good!

Gorges-Subban
Markov-Stralman/Niskanen
Tinordi-Weaver

Like the markov deal, he's a key part of our team, and this means he'll probably retire with us.

But props to your Orchid avatar, one of my favourite bands.

When Markov's 38 and playing 15 minutes a game he'll look just as good as he does now. This deal is going to mark his decrease in responsibility on this team. And an aging vet making 5.75M in 3 years, when the cap is upwards of 70M, isn't a problem whatsoever.

I'd like to see Weaver re-signed too but then it means Gorges or Emelin are the only guys who could get traded at all off the blueline. Tinordi and Beaulieu deserve their shot as 5-6 guys but alas they may have to be 6-7 guys if we also retain Weaver thus leaving Greg Pateryn the odd man out. They may be using 14-15 to judge Emelin and Gorges. Both had their struggles last season, especially Emelin who in the wake of his torn ACL looked completely lost and flat-footed. The guy can hit but his positioning is brutal at times.

I think whichever of those two is the inferior one next season could be packaged in a trade. Same goes for whichever one of the centres among Desharnais and Plekanec looks worse (so Galch can move to the C position). Therrien takes his sweet time properly inserting youth so Bergevin has no one to blame but himself if he doesn't put MT in a situation where he has to give the youth the ice time. Anyway we needed Markov but the guy can't handle top pairing minutes anymore. We have a few viable top 4 Dmen but no top pairing guy to go with Subban now.

I don't have a problem with this deal. I preferred a 2 year deal but 3 isn't the end of the world.

The deal may look really bad in his third year, but we had no choice, other teams would have easily thrown $6M at him. Happy Markov will be back.

I don't think Emelin/Gorges at 4 million are a problem, the problem is those 2 and Markov have been playing too many minutes because we've had plugs like Murray/Bouillon on our third pairing so our top 4 get burnt out by the end of the year. If we can get 2 of Beaulieu/Tinordi/Nygren/Pateryn playing full time this year and taking minutes away from those other three guys our defense can be solid.

It'd be nice to have something like this where Emelin can play on his more natural side.

Markov - Subban
Beaulieu - Gorges
Emelin - Nygren/Tinordi/Pateryn

There was nobody available who's better than Markov. And yes, there always is an opportunity to improve. None of our contracts are immovable, which is one of the positive from Bergevin. The worst one is arguably Emelin's, but even he could be moved.

In any event, if Beaulieu shows amazing things, then he will get more responsibilities. Why the heck not?

How slow is Markov going to look at 36, 37, and 38?
