Good player who better be careful where he lands. #4 D? Sure. #2? He could implode like he did in Dallas.

Good luck to whoever signs him. Much like baseball, never sign a guy that just had a career year in his "walk year".

If Edmonton signs him to something stupid like 4+M.... I'm going to pay someone to shoot me... that was sarcastic, but i'feel that... sarcastically.

Uh yeah, Shero allegedly offered more than that in January and it wasn't in the ballpark.

Niskanen's going to close in on 6 million annually. Perfect storm of supply and demand. Lot of teams with cap space can use a guy like him. Only one of him in his age group on the market.

If he were willing to sign for around 4, he'd probably remain a Penguin. Think 7 years, 40 million (5.714 per). I'd have no problem paying him that to come to Edmonton. The guy worked well in a pairing with Maatta, and for a brief stint - when Martin and Letang were injured at the same time - they were the de facto top pairing and the Penguins did fine.

It could also be that he's 27 and finally grasped the mental aspect of the game and gained the necessary strength and physical development - aka entering his prime. I see less risk with Niskanen than some others out there.

It's a little of both columns with him. He did take a step this year. And he did have a bit of the old contractyearitis.

I'd love to keep him at $4-$4.5 million. However, there will be a desperate team with cap space (Islanders, Oilers, ect) that will throw $6-$6.5million at Niskanen, which he would be stupid not to take. Good luck to Niskanen wherever he goes. Without good luck, he's not going to live up to that contract.

Pretty much. I'd say he's a #3 dman right now though. The points don't lie, and he was one of our most reliable through the stretch/playoffs.

The guys had 46 points and did pretty well in the playoffs, why do Pen fans don't want him back?

Just because of the price tag as a pending UFA. In theory, of course we'd love to keep him.

If he does $5.5-$6 mill for 6 years, then it is not the end of the world for Oilers. He will help you on the powerplay. The Oilers have a lot of cap space.

Because we're already paying over 12 million for Letang and Martin to be our primary PMDs, have Mättää stepping up and Pouliot entering the pro game. Niskanen's production profited a lot from Letang and Martin both missing half a season. It's the perfect time for him to be a free agent, and he'll want to cash in on that. Pittsburgh needs to spend the big money up front instead.

Just pay and bring him back, hopefully him leaving does not have a effect on Sid And Malkin(points wise).
