No Canuck prospect taken in the CHL draft. Hoping Forsling might come over.

Yeah, half of that list had/have NHL careers to speak of. If our current group achieves the same we should be very happy.

I would hope so, there are three top 4 picks on the list and an additional top 10 pick.

Imagine who that would be now: Barkov/ Drouin + Jones + Galchenyuk + Brodin.

Man, we sucked so hard through the late 90's. What a dark time to be a Canucks fan...

Having watched Vey and Shinkaruk in the Hat
Vey> Shinkaruk

Vey is a much better all around player, and shown an incredible ability to improve. Shinkaruk doesn't know how to play defense.

I agree, except I think it matters alot which one is where. If the really good piece is a center, I don't see the point in picking up one more McCann/Gaunce level center as opposed to other positions.

I think we need a high end center though. If we're in a situation that we can get both, only the defensive prospect is elite, I'd use the other pick on another defensemen or winger, personally

Canucks prospect pool needs 10 elite pieces.

Just 'cause it'd be nice.

every prospect pool needs exactly enough bluechippers to fill an entire roster, or its not actually complete

Thanks for the insight. It lines up with what some of the LA folks have said, but many of our own posters, think he is the worst thing since fart smelling cheese.

Not to mention that any perceptions of Vey would be coloured by him playing out his junior eligibility while Shinkaruk got injured in his post-draft year.

I don't think Vey played his overage year did he? I thought his huge offensive breakthrough year was his 19 season, and the next year he was in the A.

Yeah, sorry. Worded it badly, I suppose. Just meant that he played until he was AHL eligible (which due to his birthday meant he played 2 post-draft years). Shinkaruk only played a few games and for most of them he was injured.

Here are some projections for our top prospects.

Bo Horvat- 50+pt Two-way C. Ceiling 65+pt two-way force/Floor 35pt 3rd C.
Hunter Shinkaruk- 55+pt scoring winger. Ceiling 70+pt elite scorer/Floor bust
Jake Virtanen- 50+pt power winger. Ceiling 70+pt dominate scoring winger/floor 30+pt 3rd line power wing
Jared McCann- 40+pt C. Ceiling 60+pt two way C/floor 30pt 3rd C.

I'd be pretty happy if these projections come true.

Yeah i see what you meant now. They're not really that similar at all. Vey might have a huge advantage as a 2 way player, but Shink has an advantage as a pure goal scorer. No saying what he might've done if healthy, definitely unfair to compare a breakout 19 yr old season to a guy who basically lost that whole season to injury.

Good list- Hard to rank guys really close to contributing in the same list with guys like Shink, Virt, Hutton and Demko who all feel a little bit like wildcards at this point.
Then there are some hard to rank guys behind them like;
Forsling, Subban- will their size doom their nhl chances, or are they our future PP qb's?
Tryamkin- How in h. can we even rank this guy? He may be great and never come over, he might be Hal Gill with a funny accent or he might be our Chara. I have no clue.
Fox- Does his goal scoring translate at the nhl level? the ahl level? German B league?
Kenins- My favorite prospect nobody talks about, was absolutely flying at the olympics. Hansen-like but with stone hands

I think Jared McCann is still a mystery, opposed to the other guys, who all know their roles and how potentially good they could be in the NHL. McCann has lots of tools, we probably need another year, to have a grasp of what kind of potential he actually has.

Ain't that the truth.

Especially since one of the funny things about "elite pieces" is that they don't tend to stay in the "prospect pool" for very long before graduating.
