I would have rather picked up mckeown. It was a good pick for the kings. He has a lot of upside. He could end up being like Keith

Exactly.
That is called 'potential'.

Dalpe had none at that point.

Vey has a lot more.

You have to pay a price for guys that have that potential.

Yes, Vey was a first-line center on a very good AHL team and he had some call-ups to the big club this year but a lot of guys with those credentials never made an NHL impact. Vey has good vision. I hope he does well for you. We'll see what happens.

Kings so good they draft a guy at 96th and trades for a 50th pick.

and that's why they have the cup

Good trade. I've like Vey for awhile. Will be nice to be able to see his development up closer in the Nucks organization. Good to have more depth at center.

Vey is a pretty good player and is probably ready to move on from the AHL but I still would much rather have kept the pick and taken Mckeown. Our defense pipeline isn't exactly bursting and Mckeown is great value at 50th. I'm worried that Vey is just going to be yet another 3rd liner which we are apparently cornering the market on.

His brother played for the Giants a while back, too. Always liked Linden Vey, he's a good pickup for a late second.

They've been very lucky healthwise on both their Cups wins. That's as much if not more a factor. Maybe we win one more game had Hamhuis not gone down in game 2 for example.

??? Did you want him to regale you with the time he and the Queen of England split a bottle of Crown Royal behind the bleachers of the British Open?

I mean he's still a young man who hasn't had to do these kinds of pressers over the radio. He could also be dealing with a lot of things at the moment. Or maybe he's just not much of a talker. Don't ding a young man for not being entertaining enough on the radio. It's a pretty unfair shot. Vey has talent. Let's judge him on that and his development as he plays for the organization, yes?

We get him when he's NHL ready (hopefully), after a Championship organization has put in the time, effort and money to develop the kid...

That makes him more valuable at this point, than he was in 2009.

Not to mention, when he was drafted, there was a lot more 'risk' than there is now.

He could have flamed out at the AHL level (ala Jordan Schroeder), and have even less value. Or, he could have met/exceeded expectations, and have increased his value.

I think a lot more goes into scouting than just hockey knowledge. I would say critical thinking and reasoning is a big part of it and a lot of the scouts I've met (for the most part junior level so not the NHL), were severely lacking in those areas. That's why you have Delorme, Milbury and other colossal failures.

And honestly, as we've seen, a simple statistical method would be more effective than the Canucks have been over their past 13 years. So it's not a stretch to suggest that someone like thefeebster or arsmaster will manage to outperform actual scouts.

As for myself, I'm giving my opinions because that's what this board is for.

If your 50th overall pick develops to where Vey is (nothing left to prove at the AHL level) you take that any day of the week. This is a fantastic move in my eyes. You get a kid who has already been developed. We'll see if Vey will sink or swim at the NHL level, but o write him off is asinine. He's shown everything you'd want to see out of a developing player this far.

Great move.

Give an intelligent and observant fan coaching in front of the camera and practice in front of the camera and they can be a commentator. Pay them to watch a regions junior hockey full time and they can be a good scout. Truth is, most jobs dont have people born into the skill set, if you are intelligent, dedicated, hard working and enguaged by the work, you can do it if given the chance.

We all know Jim Bennings drafting history where he drafted players after the 1st round and have become very good NHL players.

He is good at drafting so if he traded the pick, maybe he saw something in Linden Vey back when he got drafted.

If Gillies made this move, I wouldnt be sure but Benning has a good draft record and if he traded the 2nd for Vey, I am sure he sees good upside in Vey.

Did Linden Vey play vs Boston when he was playing on the Kings?

Nepotism works as well (though some guys end up even being pretty adequate at the job - Gradin for example).

It really depends on a) do they enjoy the work, or is it just the only thing they are qualified for so they do it anyways. B) Are they intelligent and perceptive people to begin with.

I believe it is the standard procedure largly because there is no reasonable way for someone to work up the ranks to a scouting position.
