Picked up an extra 4th and used it on a goalie prospect that many people had rated quite well. Works for me.

He had a 1.99 GAA and .923 SV% as an 18-year-old in the Finnish men's league. Both figures were top-10 in the league.

Ranked #1 European goalie. Army has done it again.

Shaping up potentially as greatest Blues draft ever.

Don't know if there could have been more steals for the Blues in this.

I know it's too early to know with goalies, but this is an exciting pick.

I've never seen him play, but for an 18 year-old to be playing in The Finnish Elite League-that's very impressive. His stats are pretty meaningless based on so few starts. But his being listed as the top European goalie in the draft, with all the excellent Finnish, Swedish, Russian and Czech goalies considered, is impressive. I'm all for the pick, as The Blues need to replenish their prospect pool as players graduate and are traded or leave as free agents, and they got a good one without using up a valuable early pick, needed for quality forwards.

I was lucky enough to watch all HIFK's games this past season, and I'm really jealous for you guys drafting Husso. He's big, and as calm as they come, very smooth movement.

Ville is a guy, who shines in tight situations. I have no doubt, that he won't be a starter in the NHL. Kudos.

He became the starter for HIFK last fall after being the nr3 goalie.
HIFK had Brad Thiessen as a starter but he failed after that Husso took over and played great on a not so great team with a lot of injuries.
He has been compared to Kari Lehtonen by some.

It sure seems like Finland is constantly pumping out great goalies (just look at Olympic rosters)

Everyone seems to really like our draft. Here's hoping they're all right.

Likely no other reason than being a goalie (and Europe-grown, to boot). Given how you can get a great value even from later rounds and at best bring across undrafted names who turn out to be studs, there's no point in wasting a high pick on one.

For comparison, some other Finnish goalies...

Antti Niemi - undrafted
Pekka Rinne - 8th round, #258 overall
Karri Rämö - 6th round, #191 overall (later a FA to Calgary after playing in Europe)
Niklas Bäckström - undrafted

Last year, the Predators drafted Juuse Saros at #99 overall and he's of same age as Husso and has been putting up even more impressive numbers. Only Finnish goalies currently in the NHL who have not been drafted low are Rask and Lehtonen, going #21 and #2 overall, respectively.

I'm a Finn, and I find it hard to consider these low picks an insult. It's simply smart management.

Given how he's one year overage and drafted from Europe, I'd say he is.

It's highly likely though he'll stay in Finland.

I met Ville in the store after the draft ended. I was hoping the Flyers would draft him, so my face lit up when he said it was him (told him so). It was only a minute, but he's a nice guy.

HIFK fan here. Grats for picking up Ville, I think you'll be very happy with him in the years to come.

Husso was (a bit surprisingly) not drafted last year, but he never let it get to him but just kept working hard. Last season he was supposed to be our 3rd choice and play most of his games in a lower league, but with Brad Thiessen never managing to adjust to the European game, and our backup being just a backup, Husso made the starter spot his own - not bad for a 18-year-old goalie playing his first season with men. He put out some really impressive stats considering how **** and unorganized our team was last season - our defense was abysmal, we had to play forwards as D-men for like half the season.

Husso did make some silly rookie mistakes in the first couple of games, but always bounced back immediately, playing superbly the rest of the game. He simply doesn't let pressure get to him. His mental strength is immense, and that's the biggest reason I've no doubt he'll play as starter in the NHL one day.

Husso will be our starter next season, so he'll get plenty of experience and quality coaching (goalie coaching is one of the few things that is very right with HIFK right now). Unless you lot steal him to the AHL before that, which would make no sense to me.

I think it's a positive thing that he's a year overage, too. Goalie prospects are always long-term projects and it'll be several years before he can be realistically expected to compete for a starter spot in the NHL. You never know for sure how these kids will turn out of course, but I'd be very optimistic with Ville.

Agreed. Pretty impressive being a 18 year old kid Ville Husso playing already in the Finnish Elite League, hope he keeps it up gets signed to a ELC, and crosses the pond in a couple years to play in North America.

IMO right up there with Demko as best goalie in the draft. Amazing. Kid is a GAMER.

Husso has been compared by some stylistically to Dallas Stars standout Kari Lehtonon, Husso is said to be a strong technical and positional goalie already, and it should come as no surprise for a Finn that he has a good, reactive glove.
