We really only gave up a 6th round pick for this?

I think he had a point in the first 12-15 games or something like that and tailed off slightly near the end of the season. He was on pace for 65 points that year. He broke his jaw in pre-season and that's when things took a turn for him this year. The Oilers were so desperate to get him back that he was rushed back into things and struggled off the hop.

He's a perfect example of a player that just needed a change in scenery. Really hope he does well with you guys.
ahahahahahah I can't wait

I'm thinking Gagner shifts to wing for us - he's simply not good at center.

Is Crombeen an upgrade to Biz? $1.15M sounds like more than Biz will command, right?

Ugh

Craig Morgan ‏@cmorganfoxaz 4m
Sam Gagner has a $4.8 million cap hit each of the next two seasons, but I believe his actual salary is $5M per season.

Someone please tell me that Crombeen can kill penalties, because I know he can take penalties

Blues fans would be the best to ask about this, but I think Crombeen is a marginal improvement on Biz.

If he didn't acquire a C he would have been in the hot seat. For price we paid Maloney should be getting praise for reading the market correctly.

I thought he was playing wing already for Edmonton? If he's bad at faceoffs I don't think he'll last at center here. Unless they plan to use him just like Ribeiro. But that doesn't track with the whole 4 line thing.

I think your right. Vrbata's replacement. Younger and probably cheaper than Vrbata.

My immediate thought is, you can't kill penalties if you're the one sitting in the penalty box.

He was playing C for Edmonton. Theory was if he went to TB they'd shift him to wing, but he's going to have a shot at 1C for the Coyotes for better or for worse.

He's alright on the PK but I wouldn't put him there too much.
You're correct he takes a lot of penalties.

I think Crombeen can be trusted to play 8-10 minutes a night. Averaged 1:29 and 1:43/game on the PK the past two seasons.

Still meh on acquiring him because I'd rather just put Szwarz at 4RW, but you can't really complain about the cost.

It's good value in a vacuum, but is it a good idea for a an extremely low budget to risk tying $5 million up on him when we already have $2 million tied up in a buyout?

I know right. They at least wanted a 2nd for him.

I would have been ok with this if salary had been retained. This raises a lot of question marks for our wingers. Maybe they think getting a PMLD will be a cake walk and have a kings ransom lined up for Yandle but need to wait for FA?

So we just ate up 6.2 mil of the budget on these two guys. What's that leave, 4 mil more?

We still have plenty of cash left for a legitimate winger, whether that's Vrby or another UFA. As well as a backup goalie and a 4C.

We essentially have 3*2nd line centers. Maloney will insulate Gagner just like they tried to do with Ribeiro. Face off % can't be any worse than Ribeiro's 43% last year.

Thing is though is that up to this point in his career Gagner has been more of a playmaker than a shooter (although he has pretty good hands and finishing ability). I'm thinking/hoping he becomes a RH version of Whitney for us instead.

Good news: Tampa retains 1/3rd of Gagner's salary.
