It certainly seems like an overpayment IMO. The Avs are showing they will overpay in trades and I dont like that personally.

Or...maybe, JUST MAYBE, the thought was "Why trade PAP for Briere and not a defenseman?"

IF Roy was bound and determined to trade him, why did it have to be for Briere, who while he had a time when he was really a nice player in the NHL, that time has passed.

This is what I was talking about before, why are we looking at more Forwards? It's going to be awfully hard to sell this on the fan base if this is the ONLY move they end up making...

I'll wait and see what corresponding moves happen after this one before I piss a fit. It's got to be a move to clear that second year off the books, much like when they swapped O'Brien for Sarich.

I didn't want them to bring in Gorges, before going after Ehrhoff, Orpik, and Mitchell first, but all I got to say is now they better bring in one of those guys.

If we just re-sign Benoit and trade PAP laterally for Briere, while Gorges was apparently available for peanuts, it's gonna be pretty dumb.

Its lateral, and gives the Avs options at center if Stastny bolts.

Briere has less contract remaining and the Avs can use that when it comes time to re-up MacKinnon and others.

Think about it. We still have 2 compliance buy-outs left, and now we only have to pay 1 year's worth instead of 2 year's worth.

We'll compliance Danny Briere and use our cap space starting tomorrrow.
But then why would we give up the picks? Look what Yzerman did yesterday, if this is true then Roy is not doing a good job of asset management. I think he stays, Roy wants more veterans on this team.

Avs saved 4 million actual dollars(Not this year, but next). Maybe they are planning on spending it elsewhere? Erhoff, Stastny? Maybe they are just freeing up some cash for the team long term.

That's possible. Kinda like giving away a 5th for 4 million dollars.

He is only owed $2 in actual money. What would it cost?

Edit: read capgeek wrong, it's $4m. Still cheaper than pap.

Just like that, we have our French-Canadian replacement for Stastny.

All is well.

Tough for me to judge this trade though. Sounds like it's a win for Roy as he got rid of a player he didn't really care for all that much...but I'm not sure how much (if at all) it will actually affect the team.
Brière gave us decent offense for a guy stuck on the 4th line most of the time. He showed up for the playoffs, too. He might break out if given more icetime. He also was a good team player despite being stuck on the 4th line.

Not to say i think this deal makes sense. IMO PAP is a better asset than Brière... and then there's the extra pick.

The silver lining is that we'll get a lot of enjoyment out of D2M defending him when he sucks and we all rage.

I for one am indifferent. Everyone around here was losing their mind when PAP was on the ice saying he added nothing, now we possibly have a similar guy but with 1 less year to worry about it. I see this as a cap space clearing move more than anything. We paid a 5th round pick for 4mill in space next off-season.

I don't get the calls that this is a bad trade. Briere adds depth and versatility along with freeing up $4m in salary in 15-16. The 5th round pick is insignificant.

Briere's contract was signed after the lockout. Pretty sure we can't use a compliance buyout.

1. It won't be the only move. 2. PAP obviously has turrible trade value. They have tried since last season to trade him.

And yeah, I don't hate Briere as most seem to on here. I like him as a player and think he rebound a bit for us.

Maybe we flip him like yesterdays trade. I'll wait 15 minutes to see. And as was mentioned, a buyout could also be in the works. I'll wait.

What I don't like is that Briere's almost 37 years old.
Don't care that PAPs gone and I remember many of you saying at the trade deadline that he probably wasn't worth much more than a mid round pick, so what?
