Yeah, I thought it was Calgary's pick for a minute. I've edited.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding Dreger. Any team would laugh at the Flames if they got a similar offer.

IMO, the Flames probably offered something like Hudler and Glencross for the 12th and Ribeiro.

EDIT: Maybe the didn't decline, actually, if Ribeiro was asked to waive. Would have been a total coup for the Flames.
Yeah, I think Maloney was willing to do it and asked Ribeiro to waive. Arizona is cash-strapped and willing to save money how-ever possible. But from the sounds of it, Ribeiro declined to accept due to his NMC. This is what it sounds like what happened to me. Good thing for Arizona fans this didn't happen, I guess. Although now they're stuck with Gagner instead of possibly a better option through free agency, so it's very hard to say for sure.

I think you should change the title and just have a do-over on this thread.

No they wanted the 7th overall. For a cap dump that is not worth giving up the 7th overall.

if ribero was bought out, he immediately becomes a UFA and teams can sign him today if they like ( kind of like how the habs signed briere before the 1st).

Yeah, there had to be more to it. Can't see Maloney willing to just give up his 1st round pick straight up for a player dump. Not to mention, there literally HAD to be something coming back for the trade to even get processed. You can't get something for nothing in a trade in the NHL.

Agreed

Ribeiro really screwed over Phoenix here

So essentially the Flames get Ribeiro and the 12th overall pick for nothing
Now that's a fair trade lol

Exactly what I stated, haha. Rather that they give him the chance to rebound his value before next year's deadline than take a raw deal like that.

How about Ribeiro throwing the Coyotes and his team mates under the bus.

Ah okay, I didn't know that. Thought he still had to wait until July 1st. Interesting.
After Ribeiro's dirty laundry was aired out by Maloney for everyone to see, I doubt there will be much interest. Wouldn't be surprised to see him sign in the KHL or the Swedish league. Hard to see a team taking a risk on him when so many teams are up so tight against the cap as it is. Maybe a team trying to reach the cap floor will take a flier on him, but do they really want him around their young guys? I sure wouldn't, knowing what his issues are.

I'm not the one writing the checks, but I prefer the Perlini-Gagner gamble with the buyout than tossing the 12th overall just to get rid of the contract and crossing my fingers I can bring in someone better for the franchise than those two.

With an offer like that I think I might stop blocking Calgary's calls, can't knock them for trying I guess.

Yeah, you have no idea what you're talking about. Mike Ribeiro is the last player in the league that anyone should be defending or be considerate towards. His unprofessionalism dwarfs the one minor quip made by Maloney.

It's only really happened one time in the cap era though, and that was with a player that had already retired in Malakhov. It's otherwise incredibly hard to pull off, especially when said player is still decently productive.
