I highly doubt Gorges is out of the top 4 next season. He is a excellent top 4 defensive dman and is only going to be 30 at the start of next season.

That trade forum thread is pretty wild.

Love the character player pickups. Well done, TM.

Josh Gorges; by the numbers (2013-14)

There's no denying that Gorges is a defensive-defensemen. His defensive-zone numbers pigeon-hole him as such. Cap-issues aside, the quality of competition Gorges faces, combined with a team-best ability to safely move the puck out of the defensive-zone tells us that there is simply no other defenseman currently on the team able to fill any hole left by a Gorges trade.
Seems like a strange quote about Gorges, regardless of how you want to interpret advanced stats, in that if you want to criticize him, it's fair to do it on the basis of his inability to safely move the puck more than anything else. I mean, he's solid positionally, and he blocks a lot of shots as a result, he stays in his lane, and he competes hard and uses his head to win puck battles along the boards. He'll always sacrifice himself to make a play or block a shot. He's a pure team player that way. But he does have limitations in moving the puck, in any respect, anywhere on the ice, including his own zone. And he is terrible in the offensive zone, he has no shot and no vision for playmaking. Excellent penalty-killer, always a guy you want on the ice when you're down 5-on-3. Really good player to pair with somebody else who is a little more of risk-taker or might jump up in the play.

Great deal for the Sabres, his normal value aside from this little melodrama the last couple days should have been dramatically higher than a mid-late 2nd. Even if the Sabres just wanted to flip him at a later date, it was a good value pickup.

Gorges is a great pick up for us. Didn't think he'd waive his NTC for us, but I'm really happy to have him. He's a really solid defensive D, a heart and soul player, and I think he'll be a huge help to whichever of Myers/Pysyk/Risto he plays with.

He's a natural partner for Myers, though Ristolainen would also work should he make the team.

Awesome heart, good d-man, you guys will love him. What,s even greater is the fact that he refused to go to Toronto 'cause he hate them so much. How can you not love a guy like that?

Don't expect the world....but he'll give you more than what you will be expecting....

I see you missed the "too early to tell" portion of the sentence.

So, in his projection, he had McCabe, Zadarov, and Ristolainen making the team. . . With Zadarov on the top pairing, Ristolainen on the second pairing, and McCabe on the third pair. All of which is jumping the gun big time. Also assumes that Zadarov and Ristolainen can handle those big minutes.

And in the midst of those projections, we can safely assume that Gorges will be top 4 and McCabe won't.

But it's not too early to tell.

As most of us were watching SportsNet coverage via NHLN, here's the TSN coverage of the trade, including an interview with Gorges:

I'm simply saying Gorges will be in the top 4 for the 15-16 season and I don't need time to tell me that. Feel free to disagree. I'm not quite sure what is causing the confusion for you. Maybe you think I'm just looking at this as Gorges vs McCabe. I'm not.

I agree the poster is jumping the gun big time.

I agree with Der Jaeger. It's too early to know what will happen next year, however unlikely.

Murray must have been pretty pleased when this fell in his lap.

Thank you captain obvious. It's called stating what I think is going to happen. I would be shocked if Gorges wasn't in the top 4 next season (15-16).

You're nitpicking at projections. Rob made a projection which had potentially three rookie Defensemen on the team, with two of them playing top four minutes. Looking at fits, for the long-term, I said that I would put McCabe next to Ristolainen. Disagree if you want, but neither Rob nor I are confused.

I read the article.

I don't know what's more embarrassing to Toronto. The sour grapes and whining from the reporter, or the out-and-out racism in in the comments section.

Why do I ever read the comments section on online newspapers?

Yeah, it jumps the shark about two comments in, doesn't it? Wow.
