Heck, if Calgary really needs to hit the cap floor, I'll sign for the league minimum and then they can buy me out the next day.

.... 2.9 mill... PER ...

O'Brien is much worse than Engelland.

Yeah I thought this was total, this is a really bad signing. Dunno what they are thinking with this one.

3 million for a flaming pile of garbage and it's not even the worst deal today? What a crazy free agent frenzy this has been

In fairness to Calgary, you can never have too many guys around who can keep John Tortorella from getting into your dressing room

Gaudreau is gonna feel pretty safe on the ice with McGratton and Engelland policing it.

Engelland is....not an effective D. He can play some forward at a reasonable level, but he's on record as hating playing forward

Love it. Pugnacity and truculence.

Who cares about cap hit? Burkeliving openly asked for cap dumps and bad contracts. I didn't realise he'd actively sign bad contracts, but for the people spazzing out over the money, who cares? We're not exactly in cap hell here, and its unlikely he gets so bad he'll require a buyout in the next three years.

Ouch... It's almost like they got solid deals on the first two today so they said "**** it, make er rain!"

This has Brian Burke's greasy fingers all over it. Truculence gets you multi-year contracts. I love these deals where you figure the AAV has to be the total value of the contract and then go, well, that's garbage. Jeff Finger all over again.

I like the guy, tough as nails, can fight, and versatile. He can play bottom pairing dman or 4th line forward. That being said, $3m for him is crazy. $1.5m would be something i could see a team paying him.

LOL, thread wouldn't be complete without Oiler fans crapping in it.

Worry about the Pouliot signing before you mock this one.

Still better than Pouliot, Bolland, Nikitin, Clarkson

He's a #5, had 6 goals in 58 games last year so it's not like he's devoid of offence. And brings toughness to our blueline.

Maybe 500K too much, but we need to reach the cap floor anyways. Relax people.

It's still a bad contract regardless. If I was giving Engelland 3m, it better be for 1 year.

Buyout potential right here.

Starting off with bad and not declining much beyond bad isn't exactly an endorsement. Being big and having that pretty be your only skill shouldn't get you multi-year contracts let alone being more than a million/year.

I'm really happy for Deryk Engelland. By all accounts he's a first class person and he paid his dues for a long time to make the NHL.

With all that said, his contract is absurd. Not you've got to pay to get a guy on July 1 expensive, but down right absurd. He's a #7 defenceman.

Jesus Christ, Calgary. He's a 7th defenseman.

I know it's only 2.9 but this is a horrible contract, absolutely vomit inducing
