Having a decent 7th defensemen isn't dumb. Injuries happen.

It's just 1.25 for a year. Not much risk even if he's worthless.

I didn't say that. Contracts like the one the quote pointed out like Gervais/Lilja/Walker/Gill are dumb. It's basically signing a free check for a warm body.

Having a 7th D isn't dumb in itself.

Funny to see the Edmonton hate...cause as a CBus fan, I'd say he was solid enough as a depth guy judging by the 10 or so games he was in.

He got a rough go in Edmonton and became disgruntled hence the trade.

We have no defensive system, so he struggled.

If you have a good system, he'll fit right in and do his job.

As others have said, he is pegged as our 7th dman right now. Instead of having a kid in that spot, we got a vet. Not very big deal.

Schultz is going to spend most of his time in the press box. He's a guy you can put there without concern for his development. You don't want to have a prospect as the 7th dman because being scratched will hamper his development. Prospects can be called up if there is an injury or trade, and Schultz can still be the 7th guy.

O'Donnell was a solid third pairing guy. You think other teams all have great players as their #7?

I hope he gets the memo that he shouldn't go as a police officer to the team Halloween party...

Whatever, he's a 7D, and the Flyers are much better than the Oilers.

I saw him in a few games since he left Minnesota two of them in person and he's still one of those defenseman you don't notice. He spent a lot of time covering up young oilers mistakes but now that the flyers have ditched that run and gun offense they used to rely on and are more fundamentally sound I think he'll be serviceable if there's an injury. I would've much rather preferred him last year over Ballard or Blum when injuries hit. He's cheap and flies under the radar and with the amount of money defenseman got this off-season I'd say this isn't a terrible signing.

seems like a lot to pay a guy to be the 7th dman.

It's definitely overpayment if he ends up playing 6 games like Hal Gill did the other season.
But he should be capable to contribute more on the ice...

Schultz is a guy who can give you solid minutes, if you play a solid, structured defensive system. Which is why he was always solid, if unspectacular in Minnesota.

And why he looked awful in Edmonton.
