So our first line will likely be
Antropov/Tucker-Sundin-Czerkawski. (according to Quinn himself from the sun this morning).

Habs fans were already jumping on us for this signing, but 500k is fine for him even..

Now that it's official, I'll admit that I'm kind of looking forward to watching what he can do with the puck. I will also get the chance to judge for myself whether he deserves the reputation he has. At worst he gets relegated to the press box or get his ice time cut. At best he provides some good offensive entertainment a la Berezin.

I'm curious to know what he signed for, but I'm sure its a conservative salary and it's only for one year, which is the main thing, imo.

However, I would prefer no more old guys! (Mariusz is not so old actually which is another small positive).

I'm curious. Why do people keep comparing him to Hoglund? Jonas was a decent two-way player with some minimal offensive skills. Czerkawski is reportedly very much a one-way player with definite NHL offensive abilities.

I am sure Aki Berg had something to do with this. He must be pumping his fist in the air right now.

I hope he is better than what 85% of the people on these boards say he is. I would have waited even longer in signing him...wait to see if Steen or another kid have a great camp and give them the job...if not offer Czerkawski the job. Now they are somewhat stuck with him for now..although at 500,000 he is not indispensable.

One thing for sure...being a one dimensional player, he better pot at least 40 playing with Sundin. (as Quinn apparently said he is going to)

I don't know. Hoglund had 8 goals the year before joining the Leafs. Then everyone was completely shocked when he scored 29 the following year. Czerkawski had 25 last year.

I don't think he'll be as bad as Hoglund. Czerkawski actually has some skill with the puck and can shoot the puck in the net, rather than right at the goalie's chest. Hoglund was the worst finisher I have ever seen on a top line, and I am still baffled as to how he potted 29 that one year -- Sundin was a demon...a good finisher might have had 50 that year. For every goal Hoglund would score, he would miss 2 gimmes. If you got a point for every time you hit a goalie square in the chest protector, Jonas would have won an Art Ross.

Mariusz is a much better finisher than Hoglund, so if the rumours are correct and he indeed does start off with Mats, his production should be fairly significant. I know he has a lot of deficiencies in his game, but we needed a scorer, so if he ends up being a 30+ sniper for us at $500K, then Fergie should deserve a round of applause.

If he is riding the pine by November...at least we can take solace in the fact he didn't cost much.

Comparisons to Hoglund are being made for new whipping boy purposes only by fans and media .IMO

Style wise in play he is much closer to Berezin no doubt ..

Personally I'm not side tracked by this signing, as I have Belak firmly entrenched as my whipping boy, and style wise also no comparison to Czerkawski here needed..

I think Czerkawski will score 20 goals for us this year, which will help the team ..

Not only will he play with Mats and score, he'll also be very important part of the shoot up line up. He is very good on break aways and is also good on penalty shot I saw him beat Brodeur few times. I think you'll see him as one of the 3 shooters.

Hoglund just would not bear down in close. It used to drive me nuts.

Fact - He won't be playing on the penalty kill and he won't be playing in the last few minutes of a close game in defensive situations.

What the Leafs do lack is scoring on the Wings. They have addressed this situation. I can't see why this isn't a good thing.

As for Habs fans not liking him. He didn't have a good year there. He had many problems with the coaching staff, and they didn't use him to maximize his ability. On the other hand, Quinn likes his skill set. He is friends with Mats, and will be in a situation where he is comfortable.

Coming off a 25 goal season, I see no reason why he can't at least repeat that, and playing with Mats Sundin only makes players better.

Good Signing by JFJ at a great price.

NYI fans are really the only ones I'd trust on the issue. My personal observation of him is that the man has some skill, greatly underrated amounts of it. Whether he puts it to use remains to be seen, but I'm all for the signing given our situation. As for many people agreeing, you should know by now that most haven't seen him play much, and are just hopping on the bashwagon for the following principle reasons.

1. Leaf signing.
2. To appear knowledgeable.

Those that dislike the signing, have seen him play quite a bit (over a number of years), and have legitimate reasons not to sign him, are few and far between, though IMO there exists some good arguments as to why he's not a good signing.

At 500k he's more than worth it to me.

Yes -- this signing will be VERY significant if this is the case. No one seems to be talking much about the impact of the shoot out, but I believe it will be HUGE. I figure Toronto is going to battle hard with 5 other teams for the final three playoff spots (New Jersey, Florida, Islanders, Atlanta and Montreal). The shoot out could be the difference.

So would this be the NYI/MTL player Berger was talking about a onth or so again.

Seems a far cry from the defenseman that was rumoured.

Fearless prediction:

Tucker - Sundin - Czerkawski = 85 goals
Stajan - Allison - O'Neill = 60 goals
Antropov - Lindros - Ponikarovsky = 50 goals

I like the sound of that scoring depth.
