This is normal procedure. The deadline was this afternoon. It doesn't mean much.

This is good news for sure...one way or the other PK will be starting the season with the rest of the team.

They obvious don't want to be part of the team, so I better rush off to the trade forum and ask what people would be willing to give up for them...

Someone had to say it...

I believe this means they both can't get offer sheeted so that's a good thing.

This should be merged with the Subban contract talks thread (adding that he filed for arbitration in the title).

My bad! didn't know how, assumed mods would merge it eventually.

Eh...

It's also about Eller, who obviously isn't Subban.

If another mod wants to merge it though, that's cool.

Would th earbitrator take Ellers Playoffs into consideration? Do they count that pro rated as well? do they add that to the reg season and average it? Elles playoffs stats last spring were fantabulous.... and his last 25 game sincluding the playoffs were a PPG... interesting..

Subban will bank 8 no doubt.

Please excuse my ignorance, that's a part of hockey I don't know very well:
  • Is that bad news?
  • Does it mean it's "war"?
  • Is that the equivalent of couple counseling?
  • Does it just mean both parties want to find a fair deal but they just need neutral help to find it?
  • Should I get my MBA to get all this?
Thanks!

Roy.. its part of the process.. Arb is a way to avoid hold outs and guarantees a contract to be signed.. it doesnt however mean that they will go to Arbitration on july 21st.

They have until then to sign any deal to avoid an arbitrator...

However, even if they do go to Arbitration and subban gets say... 7.3m

they could still sign him afterwards and add 8 years to that contract....

If they take that, the habs have to accept the deal, or decline. In which case, Subban becomes a UFA.

Subban opted and Bergevin will likely keep on negotiating to get Subban to drop down some. I'm sure they're likely close to a deal now, or they're at a number where Bergevin feels comfortable to sign Subban to.

At least I hope so.

Teams have the right to chose a one year or a two year contract option when a player files. That is as per the new CBA.

Subban will be a one year obviously. Hopefully what ever he gets rewarded Bergevin will just offer that times eight years.

As for Eller without looking in to capgeek I would think the Habs choose the two year option. That is only if he would not be a UFA after that second year. That is what I am too lazy to look up.

Either way I is a great thing that they both filed. Subban can not get offer sheeted now and Eller may get a lower contract offer due to his lack of offence last regular season.

You are right, 2 years. With Arbitration MB gets to choose a 1 year or 2 year deal.

How many actually made it to arbitration once they filed for it?

Once the arb hearing comes in, whatever is decided, is the contract, unless both parties willingly refuse for the same reason. Arbitration is be all end all during sports contracts.

Winning is not the #1 thing. They want to win THEIR way.....even if it means they're handicapping themselves.

In my humble opinion, I think that this is great news for the Habs as an outside party will determine the worth of both players.

For Subban, he will get a fair decision that Bergevin will be happy with. For Eller, we may get a discount.

Does filing for arbitration prevent a player from being signed to an offer sheet? I'm not exactly sure.

I hope MB can convince the arbitrator that PK's worth is $7.5/yr... that would seem fair IMO for both parties although no doubt MB would have to argue a lower amount (ex. $6.5M) to get there.
