Oilers Contract Situation

Near as I can figure this is the Oilers contract situation heading into next season.

Forwards under contract counting toward the 50 limit:

1. HALL
2. EBERLE
3. RNH
4. PURCELL
5. POULIOT
6. PERRON
7. GORDON
8. HENDRICKS
9. JOENSUU (2015 UFA)
10. YAKUPOV (2015 RFA)
11. GAZDIC
12. ARCOBELLO (2015 UFA)
13. LANDER (2015 UFA)
14. KHAIRA
15. MOROZ
16. YAKIMOV
17. PAKARINEN
18. EWANYK
19. ACTON (2015 UFA)
20. PINNIZOTTO (2015 UFA)
21. KESSY (HOW IS THIS GUY SIGNED FOR 2 MORE YEARS??)
22. HAMILTON, RYAN (2015 UFA)
23. MILLER (QUALIFIED RFA, ASSUME WILL SIGN)
24. HAMILTON, CURTIS (QUALIFIED RFA ASSUME WILL SIGN)
25. PITLICK (QUALIFIED RFA ASSUME WILL SIGN)

- Horak having gone overseas does not count even though he was qualified.

DEFENCEMEN

26. NIKITIN
27. FERENCE
28. FAYNE
29. AULIE (RFA 2015)
30. MARINCIN (RFA 2015)
31. SCHULTZ (QUALIFIED RFA)
32. PETRY (QUALIFIED RFA)
33. KLEFBOM
34. NURSE
35. MUSIL
36. SIMPSON
37. OESTERLE
38. GERNAT
39. DAVIDSON (RFA 2015)
40. HUNT (RFA 2015)

Larsen going overseas as well does not count even though he was qualified.

GOALIES

41. FASTH (UFA 2015)
42. SCRIVENS
43. BROSSOIT
44. BACHMAN (QUALIFIED RFA)
45. TUOHIMAA (RFA 2015)
46. BUNZ (RFA 2015)

So, there ya go. Assuming that the Oilers send Khaira and Nurse back to junior and Moroz heads to the AHL, that leaves us at 44 contracts right now (i'm actually not sure if signed players playing in Junior count toward the 50 contract limit. Edit - checked on it. Signed Junior players 18 or 19 years old do not count, 20 year olds do. All but assures Moroz to AHL) Considering we usually run at 48 or 49, I'd expect to see at least 3/4 more acquisitions/signings this offseason.

As a '94 birthdate, Khaira will be in the AHL.

If that's the case, and assuming Draisaitl makes the opening day lineup, that puts the Oilers at 46 contracts. If Nurse makes the team, 47. Still a bit of breathing room, but might be a factor when looking for a 2C

We have enough contracts/players/centers/prospects right now.

The kind of guy who will take a 1 mill 1 year deal will not be an improvement over our current centers and that's pretty much all we can afford going forward.

Any trades will be a lateral move.

Mac T has all but said he is done. It would be nice to get another center but really the picking are slim and the potential that any of those remaining will be better than: Arco, Lander, Leon is pretty slim.

I've heard more than a few that say Arco is more likely to be better than Roy this year.

Not sure why everyone wants/thinks more moves are coming. We are a greatly improved team and really should be in the playoff hunt. The only thing holding us back from that is Eakins. A questionable 2nd or third line center isn't going to make or break this team.

You make some good points, but empty contract spots aren't useful for anything. Even at 46/47 contracts I think there's a couple more moves to be made before puck drop at the start of next season, even if it's waiting until the waiver wire. Our team is good on paper but we don't have nearly enough competition at forward for jobs.

47-48 contracts is the sweet spot.

No team really brings in two or three players without moving someone out in a season.

All I know is, that Yakupov is going to be wearing #10, so if he goes 35g-35a next season, they better have enough cap space to sign him up for 8 years 48 mil, you know...just saying.

If we go into next year assuming the following:

RNH willbe a beast, not get hurt and be able to log all tough minutes.

An 18 year old Draisatl is going to waltz into a #2 or #3 spot, nopt be a black hole defensively and have a great rookie year.

Arcobello who scored something like 1-1 over his last 14 games or so is going to be a viable #2 C

Anton Lander who has shown no ability to score at all in the NHL will be better.

Boyd Gordon a great face off guy who failed to score a goal in about his last 45 NHL games will contribute.

We are in a world of hurt. Our Center position actually looks worse than our tending did going into last year. If 100% of everything goes our way injury wise and performance wise this group is passable. God help us if we have any injuries or these guys score like they did last year.

I'm thinking Arco may be a bit more viable this year with the inclusion of a couple of big winger MacT has picked up. A couple of bigger winger will clear a bit of space for him and his dangles.

I guess we'll have to see about that.

Seeing Kane and Toews sign for over 10 million and other recent high salary signings, it makes Hall, RNH, and Eberle's long term contracts at 6 million look quite attractive. I think the Oilers did well locking these guys up long term at that price range.
