Your link doesn't work for me at least. But am I to assume that he has been signed for the league minimum - 1 year deal?

Just a tryout for him, he accepted the Leafs invitation on a tryout basis.

He may be 42, but would not surprise me if Stumpy makes the team. He's still in pretty good shape and still has the heart and grit to go with it. He's not the player he was, but still has some gas in the tank IMHO. Anyhow, if nothing else, he and Keane will bring a nice element to training camp and force those hoping to make the team to elevate their effort and game.

Great news. If he can make the team then all the power too him. The sad part is that is looks like the youth movement may be put on hold for one more year.

This is an excellent move as far as I'm concerned. Let Quinn and JFJ figure out if they can afford to bring in the youngsters based off of camp and if not (or if Thomas is impressive thoughout camp) bring Stumpy on board.

Not so sure that's a bad thing myself. JFJ has seemed to have paced and planned this out very well to allow for a slow transition period to finally bring in some home grown talent.

Leafs Lunch said that. But they also said that we'd have Zetterberg by now. Imho, they're no better than ******.

You KNOW that he will make the team. He is motivated, and if he shows even a hint of still having "the jam" Quinn will keep him...just like he does with all the vets. I wouldn't doubt that Quinn had a lot to do with the try-outs for Mush and Stumpy.

Oh well let them fight it out...should be a fun camp to watch. If Steen , Colaiacovo, Wellwood are for real...they will make it a no-brainer for the coach. If not...it won't hurt them to play a year in the Marlies and come across the road to fill injuries. Next year there is plenty o room for a youth movement.

Well at least its a try-out basis. If he makes the team, based on what we have now, it would likely mean one of Thomas, Antropov, Stajan, Tucker, Ponikarovsky or potentially Czerkawski (if he dogs it) would be put on the 4th line. Not bad depth if you think of it that way but Id prefer it if those younger guys get more minutes.

Actually thinking about it, if Thomas getting a spot means Stajan's puched to the fourth line, I'll be extremely dissapointed.

Out to Lunch

I didn't hear Billy Boy on Leafs lunch talk about stumpy at all on Friday. So it was a shock seeing so much of it on this site about him going to Detroit. Usually they have so little to talk about that they just say the same thing over and over again. (in between the 30 minutes of commercials per hour) If they said it once I am sure if it was something real it would have benn reitterated over and over again.

He has all but begged to play in Toronto and has been scrimaging with the Leafs players at Lakeshore arena. He looks just as fast and prepared for a season as he ever has and age doesn't have as much to do with conditioning as it did 10 or 20 years ago.

I would believe the sportsnet report before I believe the vitriol that Watters tends to spout against his former employers.

Stumpy would look great playing with Sundin even and with the chemistry they once had I would take Steve over a rookie any day.

Besides they have 2 way contracts and after this year they will have spent one more year in the "A" and playing in pressure filled and leadership situations that they would never be allowed to do with the big squad.

Unless the rookies are just far too good to let play for the Mariles this year I can definitely see Steve Thomas and perhaps even Marchment playing for the Leafs again.

I see the following line up.

Tucker, Sundin, Czerkawski
Kilger, Allison, Oneil
Antropov, Lindros, Poni
Thomas, Wilm (Stajan) Domi
Extra Forwards (can play d if needed) Belak, Keane

McCabe, Kaberle
Colaiacovo, Khavanov
Klee, Berg
Extra Defence Marchment

Belfour
Tellquist

This leaves Steen, Kronwall, Wellwood, Perrot and a host of other prospects available to learn their craft and become stronger more confident players.

I can't wait too see Stumpy fly in off the right wing one night, overtime, 45 seconds on the clock and let fly adding to his impressive overtime totals.

Just out of curiousity...flame away.

Would Thomas serve any purpose as a fourth-liner? I know the automatic thinking is to put him with Mats again, but do we really want Stumpy on our first line at this stage?

Plugging him on the fourth line would keep him on the team in terms of leadership, grit, and intangibles....while not subjecting him to too many minutes and pressure to score.

I'm brutal at these, and I'm not sure if Thomas can play left, but here we go:

Tucker-Sundin-Czerkawski
Stajan-Allison-O'neill
Antropov-Lindros-Ponikarovsky
Thomas-Kilger-Domi

That would be pretty much exactly what I'd envision the lineup as.

Part of me thinks with all these invites to camp/recent cheaper signings, that JFJ has a trade in the works. Guess time will tell.

I tottally agree and after watching Stajan play for a year on the rock I would submit that perhaps his time would be better spent learning to lead a little more for a depleted Marlies team.

I have been thinking that also.. Before camp starts would seem to be the best time wouldnt it?
