Who will be this years whipping boy???

In past years Toronto has villified and all but crucified players such as Jyrki Lumme, Berg, Reichel, Hoglund and literally drove Murphy out of town.

I have never believed that Berg is as bas as everyone else whines about and Reichel, although a but of a strange guy (often called the uni-bomber by players) was an above average player who never took a night off.

Renberg who arrived at the same time was far worse than Reichel but never got hammered like he did.

I believe Lumme got all he deserved (terrible giveaways and no defencive muscle at all). Murphy the hall of famer was having a bad year and was just roasted.

Can you think of any more?????

Who is this years version?

I am predicting, based on all the negative comments about Czerkawski already, that we will need to get some tissues to dry away poor Mariusz eyes as he crys himself to sleep everynight after being ripped by fans at the ACC and across the ever critical internet.

Poor, poor Mary

Todd "Give Away" Gill?

haha, i too don't understand the Berg thing, he's not that great but he's not that bad, overpaid imo.

I never understood it with Reichel either, always consistent at 10-20 goals and 30-50 points give-or-take playing on a 3rd or 4th line without any of the real big guns - he too was WAY overpaid at $4M.

Klee is another that gets a hard time for some reason, i really like this guy, tough, reliable and a stay-at-home defenceman that compliments the likes of McCabe/Kaberle b/c they're more offensive.

But as for this year, I have to agree with Chewy, he's toast unless he scores 30 and even still, if he doesn't back check, he's done. Silimar to Larry Murphy, if Chewy doesn't play well, i think there will be a line up of people willing to personally drive him out of down, even with gas at $1.38/litre.

IMO - Chewy will be fine

It's funny, there's also a sort of "reverse whipping boy" syndrome in Leaf nation as well, where obviously mediocre players are over-defended from perfectly justified criticism. Like Hoglund for instance...I think we can safely say the critics were right, because as soon as the Leafs got rid of him he was out of the league. Cut by the Panthers.

Czerkawski, Antropov, Khavanov and Berg. It's always the mediocre Europeans.

I'm saying Kaberle (not here, but in the media/general public), Berg, and Antropov.

Reichel was hated in Toronto because of his $4 million contact. If he were making $1-1.5 million, he wouldn't have been hated so much...$4 million implies a scoring centerman who can play on the second line.

Berg is hated because he plays like Jekyll and Hyde...you never know which Berg will show up.

1. Khavanov
2. Czerkawski
3. Berg
4. Antropov

All will be whipping boys, and in that order as well.

Mats Sundin..

Ugh, Belak, Khavanov, and Kaberle. (not by me though)

Czerkawski is too cheap to be whipped, same with Lindros, Allison, and O'Neill.

This one is easy.

Czerkawski. He'll be loved in October and loathed by Christmas.

Why are fans always so jealous of what someone else makes $$$$..

In Toronto that has no effect on anyone.... Particularly under the old CBA, as it never prevented the Leafs from adding players despite Quinn's overspending habits on current contracts ?? I never understand the guilt tossed on the player for a Team offering him the money..

Under the new CBA, these types of contracts will certainly have a widespread effect throughout the team and success ..

I am going to predict now that some of these teams that gave out $3-4 mil/per year contracts on multi-year 3 & 4 year deals for 34 year old hockey players already on the down swing are really going to regret those decisions in a Cap World soon enough. However even under these conditions its the GM that handed out the contract, all the player did was politely say thank you ..

McCabe...with his foot still in his mouth, he is in no position for an off-year.

Antropov...it's now or never.
