because maximizing your earning potential, especially for a career with a short shelf life, is important to many people.

I would love to know how much money the Hawks make per season on sales of Kane and Toews jerseys alone.

It's one of those times where you just bite the bullet and sign your young stars.

So Chicago might have about $8.0-$9.0 million to spend next season and that's if the cap is raised to $75 million to sign 8 more players. Good luck with that without having to move players.

Which is why you are not a GM.

These signings, if true, go a long way to ensuring that the Hawks are contenders for years to come. At this price/term, a no brainer.

You don't nickel and dime with proven world class differencemakers. You lock them up and build around them.

This should be expected. You can't expect the cap to rise and player salaries to remain the same.

If they were to sign for that Chicago can kiss their championship level team goodbye.

They already have two Cups. Honestly they may as well just get paid. No matter what happens for the rest of their careers, they'll always be called winners and no one will ever question them.

I completely agree with Toews, but put Kessel on the Hawks and Kane on the Leafs and it'd be a different story. I still think Kane is better but marginally, and definitely not 2.8mil better.

People obviously have issues comprehending that the model is set up so that contracts inflate in concert with the salary cap. The whole system is set up so that players get more and more of the pie as revenue goes up. Just because we haven't seen contracts like this before doesn't mean they are outrageous and if anyone should get them, it's the best players on championship teams.

And as I've argued several times, arguing that contracts are crazy by comparing cap hits across contracts signed several years apart. I'm sure if Malkin had signed a short-term deal when he signed his deal that resulted in him being a free agent after these two, you would probably be saying "Malkin isn't 1.3M better than Toews and Kane" when he's getting a 12.1M deal.

It's just how the system works.

If teams don't want to adapt, they won't sign their star players. Simple as that.

I just can't help but think that putting that much of the cap in 2 players might make it harder for Chicago to compete in the future. Better hope the cap doesn't go down one of these years.

I disagree. These two players are great, a new Gretzky and Kurri. They deserve at least 13m each, c'mon. Chicago you won two Cups, pay for them!

I thought it would be around 9-9.5 per. I really hope for these teams sake the cap goes up a good amount.

You obviously can't let them walk but man almost 11 per that's pretty steep at the current cap.

If that's true, and I know it was signed at a different time but Crosby Malkin and Ovi contracts are steals even more so then they were before.

For 1 player at 10.8M i would hesitantly agree but for two i think its too much. You are really handicapping your team which wont bode well for years to come

I don't expect people to understand the comparability between contracts given a rising salary cap.

Maybe a little pricey but they are relatively fair deals for both players given their track record and age.

Seabrook is a Vancouver area BC guy, no?

If this story is true Chicago will be voting for any and every measure to boost league revenue.

Bold move, Sportsnet contract helps stabilise league revenue, but there are still many variables that could negatively impact future salary caps.

I just heard that The Blackhawks season tickets going forward include all 82 games, to help boost league revenue across the board.

Yeah, when has Malkin ever had success in the postseason?
umm malkin had 36 points in 24 games when they won the cup and overall in the playoffs he has 111 points in 96 games he's just as good in the playoffs. I agree when you say they had to sign toews and kane they're cruical to chicagos success

This is the new reality, folks. Players of their ilk have been making this much for a while now. There's just no circumvention to hide it any more.

Without the garbage years at the end of his contract, Weber's cap hit is $10.4 million. Crosby's at $10.6. Parise and Suter at $9.4.

Toews and Kane are the first to be this high, but they won't be the last. Stamkos will very likely exceed them when he signs his extension next year. Probably Subban, too, if he ever ends up UFA.

To say you don't want Toews and Kane for this much money is to say you don't want any marquee player going forward, unless he's on an entry-level deal, a second contract or was signed to an absurdly long deal prior to the expiration of the last CBA (ex Carter).

Winning two cups and two conn smythes in their mid twenties is a valuable commodity to a hockey franchise.
