I saw it on Spector:

SPECTOR'S MAILBAG.

My thanks to "End-to-End" columnist Matthew Ryder for the following on Daniel Cleary: "The Telegram here in St. John's is reporting that Newfoundlander Danny Cleary has held talks with both Toronto and Detroit about a contract for the upcoming year. While he was didn't produce much in Phoenix during 03/04 (7G and 10A I believe) he did have a good year in Europe during the lockout. He'd be a decent pickup for the league minimum as a 4th liner I'd reckon.

I hear he is camped outside Mile One stadium in St. Johns in order to tryout for the AHL St. Johns Maple Leafs tomorrow.

Cleary was quoted as saying to Frankie our own AHL expert .... " I always dreamed of playing in front of the hometown crowd, glad I am the first one here as I hope that shows St. Johns management how interested I am in this training camp invitation.. "

One NHL scout was seen doing this and was heard commenting " I always thought he had the skills and tools to be an NHLer just not the head or toolbox to keep them in " ...

Just kidding folks !!!!! ..

its been in the telegram at least twice that the leafs are talking to cleary. yesterday it said that both the leafs and red wings are interested.

i don't know why that is so hard to believe or why its so laughable.

Its not that I don't believe it (I do take it with a grain of salt however) but the reason I find it funny is that qwert has a history of pimping Newfoundland players. I remember in the 03-04 season he had a stretch of about three weeks where at least twice a week he posted a new thread about how the Leafs shoudl give Druken a chance, and how he had the ability to be a star at the NHL level.

ah, funny.

anyway, it has been written at least twice, and i doubt its a story someone made up out of the blue. i guess we'll see if they work something out.

Since Cleary is not on Leafs training camp roster for tomorrow... .. perhaps we could draw some conclusions from that ..

oh yes, its official then, because players never join a team after camp has started.

I kinda like Dan Cleary, and would take him over Stumpy.. (mainly because I don't remember Stumpy playing for the Leafs.. )

Well tryout players certainly don't often ..

The first few days of camp are physicals and orientations etc .. they just don't knock a puck around waiting for marginal NHLers to show up when it best suits them ..

Cleary likely will show up somewhere tomorrow on a training camp invite ..

Cleary is Dreary

Unless this guy wants to play for a 2 way contract I wouldn't even bother with him.

He is a checking line winger with a terrible plus/minus. Brilliant really.

Cleary has it in him, he just has to focus. I think his head is too full of ***** for him to ever turn into what he could have been.

Cleary is much like many Newfoundland hockey players that come out of this province with loads of talent and promise. Like most of the others they seem to lack the focus for what ever reason I can not understand. Cleary definatly has the ability to be a top 6 forward but will likely stay as a frindge NHL'er.

Cleary, Druken, Ryder, King, Slaney, Ryan and Brown where all one point in there carreers looking like they where on there way to becommng decent NHL players . It will be interesting to see how Rder and King do this year. Cleary is probably on his last leg to make an impact for some team in the NHL. I an not sure how he fits into the lineup for the Leafs but hey I would rather give Cleary a look over Stumpy and Perreault. Cleary is still only 26 and I think comming back to a Canadian team would probably make a difference in his game. Cleary very much reminds me of Chad Kilger loads of potential just waiting for something to steer it in the right direction.

Personally I have always liked Cleary and followed him since he was a junior .. I don't see and NHL fit with TO ..but as A Marlie to add vet experience with the loss of Druken and Ling might not be so bad as well as a NHL injury fill in perhaps ..

Cleary - Kilger - Domi

eh.

Wilm or Kukumberg could get the job done just as easily.

They are probably talking about a try out in camp. Cleary is probably trying to get a contract while speaking to a number of teams; he will go where he thinks he has the best chance - probably he will have a better chance in Detroit. Perrault is going for a try out in Nashville; he had no chance here.
