Yes because at the time it was not really an over payment, they just took what they deserved... Its a different story this time around. Even at taking what they were worth which was closer to 8.5 the team would have still had a difficult time dealing with it but would have eventually bounced back.

Meanwhile, David Rundblad is a Norris Trophy candidate.

Keep pitching that snake oil.

Where is the money for that vaunted second line center?

Hard to calibrate the 2015-16 roster without knowing what decision Stan makes to get under the cap for 2014-15.

Say we moved Leddy and Rozsival this offseason so we could add Brookbank and work in a rotation of Rockford D-men to see which one rises to the top...

This could be a 2014-15 roster

CAPGEEK.COM ARMCHAIR GM ROSTER
CapGeek Armchair GM Roster

FORWARDS
Patrick Sharp ($5.900m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Kane ($6.300m)
Bryan Bickell ($4.000m) / Andrew Shaw ($2.000m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Brandon Saad ($0.764m) / Brad Richards ($2.000m) / Kris Versteeg ($2.200m)
Jeremy Morin ($0.800m) / Marcus Kruger ($1.325m) / Ben Smith ($1.500m)
Teuvo Teravainen ($0.894m) / Peter Regin ($0.650m) /

DEFENSEMEN
Brent Seabrook ($5.800m) / Duncan Keith ($5.538m)
Niklas Hjalmarsson ($4.100m) / Johnny Oduya ($3.375m)

CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $883,205

================================================== =====

Then this would be the 2015-16 roster building off that premise and with the conservative estimate of the cap at $74 million (Mirtle has estimated that cap as high as $76 million)...

Bickell and Versteeg would be moved. Saad, Kruger, Oduya, Rundblad would be resigned at the cap hits I have selected (admittedly these cap hits are all on the most favorable to the Hawks side of things). The 11th and 12 forwards would either be cheap vets like Peter Regin or rookies like Ryan Hartman. The 7th D man would be a rotation of Rockford rookies unless we chose not to resign Oduya because Dahlbeck lit the world on fire or something when paired with Hammer or we prioritized forward depth over veteran defensemen for some reason.

Here it is folks... a 2015-16 roster with Sharp and Seabrook both still there!

Trade Sharp & Leddy to Florida for Campbell (50% retained) and a 2015 2nd. The salary cap saving for 2014/15 is over $5M and would give the Hawks more than $2.5M in cap space heading into the 2014/15 season.

The 2014/15 lineup could be:

Morin-Toews-Hossa
Saad-Richards-Kane
Bickell-Shaw-Versteeg
Regin-Kruger-Smith

Keith-Seabrook
Hjalmarsson-Campbell
Oduya-Rozsival/Rundblad

Then for 2015/16 do not re-sign Oduya, Rozsival, Richards and Regin. Give Saad a bridge contract (2 yrs @ $3.5M) and re-sign Kruger for $1.75M.

In my opinion, the following 2015/16 lineup, using a Cap ceiling of $73M, would still be one of the top teams in the league and in the mix for the Cup:

#### Campbell

Why the hell would you want him back?

And your deal is absolutely laughable and lopsided in Panthers favor ,, Rather just put Sharp on waivers and not qualify Leddy than take that awful deal

Reading this thread... wow. Some people will always find something to complain about, I guess. It is a terrible way to go through life.

Can we consider for a second that the upcoming 2014-2015 Hawks are the best Hawks team on paper we have ever seen?

We disagree. I think Campbell is an upgrade over Leddy, Florida's 2015 2nd round draft pick will probably be almost a 1st rounder and the Hawks get $5M in cap relief.

The 2014/15 d-corps is improved with the top-5 being 2, 7, 4, 51, 27 and the 2015/16 would still have an outstanding top-4 with 2, 7, 4, 51.

I'm personally a fan of this lineup

FORWARDS
Brandon Saad ($4.000m) / Jonathan Toews ($10.500m) / Patrick Kane ($10.500m)
Patrick Sharp ($5.900m) / Teuvo Teravainen ($0.894m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Jeremy Morin ($0.800m) / Andrew Shaw ($2.000m) / Ryan Hartman ($0.894m)
Peter Regin ($0.650m) / Marcus Kruger ($2.000m) / Ben Smith ($1.500m)
Mark McNeill ($0.863m) / Joakim Nordstrom ($0.800m)
DEFENSEMEN
Brent Seabrook ($5.800m) / Duncan Keith ($5.538m)
Niklas Hjalmarsson ($4.100m) / Klas Dahlbeck ($0.800m)
David Rundblad ($0.785m) / Adam Clendening ($0.800m)
Stephen Johns ($0.800m) /
GOALTENDERS
Corey Crawford ($6.000m)
Antti Raanta ($0.750m)

CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $989,872

-I've given bonuses to all FAs
-Fits snug with a $73,000,000 cap
-Lets us keep Sharp and Seabrook
-Gives us two extra forwards to ease Sharp and Hossa's workload
-3 scoring lines and a proven checking line
-Some young defensemen here, but I'm hoping Dahlbeck and Rundblad get quality ice time this season
-Dahlbeck could do well with Hammer (both defensive defensemen as well as swedes)

I just don't see Rundblad as being viable in any future lineup that aims to be competitive. Maybe he will turn it around this season, but I highly doubt that will be the case from what I have seen of him.

Weirder things have happened though I suppose...

Rundblad was pursued by Bowman three times, so obviously Bowman sees something in him. I haven't been impressed with what he's done this past season, but he's only played a handful of games. And he can't be much worse than Rozsival was this last season.

I would rather not set the bar that low.

When a player moves around as much as he has it usually says something. I just don't believe he projects out past this upcoming season, especially with players I believe to be better for third pairing duty that are already in the system.

His RFA contract would be so cheap though, precisely because of his earlier struggles, so it would be wonderful if he wound up showing enough this year to be trusted as a Leddy replacement next year.

So I sat down for a bit, and figured out the best possible lineup, without getting rid of too many guys.

Sharp Toews Hossa
Saad(@4,25) Teravainen Kane
Morin Shaw Versteeg
McNeill Danault Smith
Mashinter

Seabrook Keith
Hjalmarsson (Leddy/Oduya/Vet @ 3mil)
Rundblad Dahlbeck
Johns

Crawford
Raanta

73,715,128/75,000,000 = 1,284,872mil in cap space

Bickell & Kruger traded for whatever we can get for them
or
Trade Sharp and keep Bickell and Kruger

I think it would be more ideal to move Bickell and Versteeg and keep Kruger.

Yeah, that would be OK. Depends on how much Kruger wants and how good/bad Versteeg is this year I think.

Trading Sharp seems logical
Cracks me up how some posters are so nonchalant about trading away Sharp. The same Sharp that is coming off his best season (RS) as a Blackhawk. And the same guy who is a consistent 30+ goal scorer. That's nothing to scoff at and not easily replaced.

To a lesser extent, despite his inflated contract, Bickell needs to stay as well. Hawks need his physical presence. So that leaves Leddy and/or Oduya that will need to go. For now, IMO, that's a no-brainer, Oduya goes ... but time is running short for Leddy. I reckon he needs to elevate his game this season, or he will also be gone by the TD or next summer. It will be interesting to see what Stan does between now and training camp.

The problem with that is, if you keep Bickell and Sharp, both Leddy and Oduya have to go (unless we get Saad at a steal of a deal). And we have to replace them with a 1mil or less player. That 2nd pairing is going to be very weak unless a prospect or cheap vet steps up big time.

I love Sharp and it will be a sad day when he goes... but it's just the most logical choice and situation to move him now. His value will never be higher, his Cap hit and we've seen how far we could go without him being any good in the POs. He'll be good until his contract ends but in our situation I'd rather get quality youth now and keep the roster intact.

That's just the business side of the NHL

Sharpie is definitely the most logical one to go and the one who will bring back the biggest return. His value could end up being a lot lower next year or it could remain the same as it depends on the type of season he has. If Bowman is planning on moving Sharp, this summer is the best time to do it. Also the draft is supposed to be a lot deeper next year which makes it a good time now to stock up on draft picks for next year. Leddy would probably bring back a decent return but just moving Leddy will not save the Hawks enough cap space. Bowman sure has his work cut out for him. This year and next will show how good a gm he really is.

Trade Roszival now... get under the Cap. Trade Sharp too, get NHL D back and 1st. Problems solved. Other than that you just let your UFAs go next season
