Sharks are On-Track to Win Cup....

Every team that has dumped a turd in the King's punchbowl of their banner raising game went on to win the Stanley cup that season. It's the Sharks turn now.

Game Overview
This game is the first for TMac returning to SAP Center, meaning he'll have to walk across the ice from the dressing room to the bench. It was only a few games ago, Jan 7th, where the Sharks were up by only one point on Edmonton who was in the cellar (and still is). But the tides have changed since then. Sharks have picked up 6 points to the Oiler's 1, and are now in 3rd place.

The last matchup was on Dec 9th where the Oilers hosted the Sharks. Sharks were on the tail end of what would become a 6 game losing streak... their worst of the season. The first quarter produced no scoring, but 18 minutes of penalties evenly distributed to both sides. Oilers scored first in the 2nd, but the Sharks tied it up just short of 4 minutes into the third. Sharks took the lead on a Pavelski goal in the last half of the third period, but that would only last two minutes. Sharks were gifted a power play on a delay of game late in the 3rd, but failed to convert. Subsequently, Sharks went 0 for 3 on the PP.

Sharks surrendered the tying goal to send the game in to overtime. Taylor Hall scored the GWG late in OT with about 1 minute left to play.

Transaction Since Last GameNo transactions reported since last game.
Jan 13th - Raffi Torres comes off suspension.

Keys to the GameShow up and play NHL hockey for 60 minutes at full speed, make your own luck, and finish opportunities with a goal.
  • Win the goalie battle. Martin lost to the backup goalie last game with a .800 SV%.
  • Tighten up the PP... convert those into a goal.
  • Keep the giveaways to a minmium.
  • Win the face offs.

Season Match UpOilers are up 1-0 in a 4 game season series.

The 5v5 stat includes short-handed assists and goals because the sample size of those are so small, it does not affect the overal outcome of the top 5 here. Also, the ranking is done on an average per game basis to filter out games played from dominating the stats.

There are some interesting observations in these 5v5 stats:
  1. These show a changing of the guard. We see the youth appear like Hertl and Donskoi replacing Marleau who does not appear on any of these. We are use to seeing Marleau leading or being second on the 5v5 goals list for years. Thornton is back, dominating the assists and leading the points since he has been on a tear since Dec. 22nd.
  2. Who in the heck says Vlasic is a defensive defenseman? Now we know why Vlasic is missed when he's out. Its not just that Sharks defensive depth is exposed, but the Sharks miss his offensive production in assists being 2nd, and on points as well.
  3. Couture. He's had a bad year in terms of injuries that limit his games played. If Couture had an near injury-free season, we probably would see Couture on all three lists.

Also, the last team to lose after being up 3-0 in a series, Boston, won the cup the following year...

The stars are aligning...

On pace for 82-0-0, Niemi to never allow a goal, and Wingels to crush Gretzky's record with 164 goals. Yeah that's how I see it going down

Marleau forever ruins his Lady Byng candidate rep with a 164-PIM season...

Clearly. His projected PIM total for this year would've put him in 5th place last season, behind Tom Sestito, Chris Neil, Antoine Roussel, and Rich Clune, and head of Zac Rinaldo.

Patrick Marleau - Noted goon.

Wasn't it that any team that beat Vancouver in the playoffs went on to win the cup? I guess we won that series a little too convincingly...

Well that's just one more thing we'll be known as. The only team to beat LA on a banner night and not win the cup.

LOL. I remember that, during the series vs. Stars in 08. Still bugs me that we've never won a playoff series against them.
