mojo update - monday

Marek's Leaf Report - Sept 12
Monday, September, 12, 2005

** Finally, training camp begins as the Maple Leafs start with physicals today at Ricoh Coliseum. On-ice workouts begin tomorrow at 9am. Leafs Lunch will be broadcasting live at the Ricoh starting tomorrow at noon. We’ll have leafs players on the show live as soon as they step off the ice

** With the signing of Brad Brown it will be tough for a young player (i.e Carlo Coliacovo, Stafan Kronvall, Ian White) to crack the Leafs lineup, especially if Pat Quinn is adamant about using Wade Belak as a defenseman.

** Despite receiving overtures from the Detroit Red Wings Steve Thomas will report to Leafs training camp on a try-out basis. Bryan Marchment will do the same.

** Roman Kukumberg has an outside chance of making the Leafs this year. Remember that name. Even though the 25-year old Slovak will miss the start of training camp with a slight knee injury he’ll be a lock to play at least for the Marlies this year.

** The Leafs rookies went a perfect 4 and 0 at rookie camp in Ottawa after beating the Florida Panthers 2-1 Saturday night. Both Leafs goals were scored by former CHL players; John Mitchell of the Plymouth Whalers and Steven Later of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

- Jeff Marek

With the signing of Brown I don't see the point. Although I'd rather have Mush.

Brown's arrival could mark a change in head coach Pat Quinn's plan to start the versatile Wade Belak on the blueline, a move that would potentially create a seven-man defence of Belak, Brown, Bryan McCabe, Alexander Khavanov, Tomas Kaberle, Aki Berg and Ken Klee.

don't worry, Quinn isn't adamant about using Belak as a defenseman.

He shouldn't be adamant about using Belak at all.

czerk sundin antro
kilger allison oniell
tucker lindros poni
thomas steen domi

kaberle mccabe
berg klee

wilm/belak are the other scratches

steen or stajan battling for the 4th line center

No. No it definitely won't be that. In fact, I'd be willing to bet my house on it.

That makes the most sense to me. Stajan is probably better off on a wing of a scoring line than at centre on the fourth. Also, it gives us one BIG line centered by Lindros. I think Quinn has stated that he wants Oneill to be on Allison's wing. Tucker is not really known for his offensive skills, but this boy knows how to score and he has excelled in the past playing with Mats. I think this combo will get the best results out of each player, with the possible exception of Antropov.

It would be nice to see Antro play on the top line, but I'm not convinced that there will be a huge difference between lines 1,2, and 3 this season. With this lineup they are all a scoring threat.

No Stajan?

Steen Sundin O'Neill
Thomas Allison Czerkawski
Tucker Lindros Domi
Ponikarovsky Stajan Antropov

McCabe Khavanov
Kaberle Klee
Berg Colaiacovo/Brown

I thought I would chip in my two cents for what they are worth. Let me know what you think.

LW - C - RW
Sundin - Allison - Czerkawski
Tucker - Lindros - ONeill
Antropov - Stajan - Ponikarovsky
Kilger - Wilm - Domi

McCabe - Kaberle
Khavanov - Klee
Berg - Colaiacovo

Spare parts: Belak (F/D), Kukumberg once healthy, Pilar once healthy, and various call ups.

Steen will in all likelihood start off in the AHL unless he absolutely blows the doors off at training camp. If he isn't starting on one of the top two lines he is better off playing for the Marlies and logging lots of ice time.

According to Bill Watters, Brown's contract is a two way deal so he is more an insurance policy. Marchment and Thomas will both be cut, barring an unforeseen injury during training camp (knock on wood it doesn't happen)

It's well known Quinn wants all of Sundin, Allison, and Lindros at C, so this won't work. Unless you made this as your own lines if it were up to you?

I was just listening to Hockey Tonight on Mojo, and at the news update, they kind of insinuated that Quinn will want to cut the roster to 21 or 22 players. If this is the case, I'd imagine Wade Belak may end up being the sole extra player, maybe Nathan Perrott if they keep 22.

The Marlies may be able to take a run at the calder cup if they end up with all of Steen/Wellwood, Kukumberg, etc. They should have a good team this year. I can't wait to check out a few games this year.

I think we are going to see:

Tucker-Sundin-Czerkawski
Stajan-Allison-O'Niell
Ponikarovsky-Lindros-Antropov*
Kilger-Wilm-Domi

McCabe-Kaberle
Klee-Khavanov
Colaiacovo-Berg

Belfour
Tell/JS Aubin

* = Look for Steen to get plugged in here if either of Poni, Lindros, or Antropov go down with an injury. He is very versatile.

I wonder if they'll consider keeping Stumpy as the 23rd guy. He'd be a guy you could easily plug into any wing position on any line when someone gets hurt.

It's a question of if a guy who is used to playing regularly for so many years can accept that type of a role. If Thomas can't then he may turn into more of a negative than a positive.

Oh I think it would be a fairly safe bet to predict that Quinn will tap Fergy on the shoulder and say give me Stumpy ..
