Don't know too much about him tbh, was just a lineup off the top of my head. There's talk of Orpik lining up with Green, which is a very risky lineup move but could allow Mike Green to go back to being Mike Green and put up some big numbers if he doesn't have to keep being the defensive one on the ice dealing with the 2 on 1's his partner hangs him out to dry with

Orpik puts himself out of position more often than most offensive defenseman in the league do. He needs a babysitter himself; he should not be the one doing the babysitting.

Niskanen is better than Orpik both offensively and defensively. He'd be better with Green than Orpik. But you wouldn't be getting full value from Niskanen on his off side with the other guy being the go-to puck mover and Nisky being the defensive guy. Nisky should be playing with someone relatively defensive minded.

Orpik has earned 32 million in his hockey career.
In his 5 year contract with Washington, he will earn 27.5 million. Near half his career earnings.

Ridiculous, he plays some of his worst hockey this year, is on a decline yet gets a lengthy lucrative contract? He is done soon, only has speed left. The only reason I think the caps overpaid for him is the only team Orpik plays good against is the Caps. He seems to raise his game significantly against them. I really think the caps signed him only seeing his play against them.

Things are looking pretty crowded on the roster with the two new signings. I'm much happier with that problem than having to field however many defencemen we had to turn to last year.

I'm most excited to have a head coach this year

We know that feeling

As for Nisky and Orpik, I expect Orpik to disappoint most everyone and for Niskanen to be solid but probably a bit overpaid. If he can keep up his play from last year it will be good, but I have my doubts about him doing that. Though Trotz does seem to know how to handle d-men.

Absolutely no way Ducks trade Silfverberg and one of their best prospect for that. I don't even understand why you put that in there? Is it because we have cap space or what? Seems so random and stupid.

if you waive him an old-boys-club-team would take him at full price!

Money and term needed to get there are both insane, but looks a LOT better than last year.

Management has strapped us into what's going to be a bumpy ride with Orpik, nothing left to do but grin and bear it, and hope all the "intangibles" we keep hearing about help the young talent coming through.
playing Niskanen with Green would be a disaster waiting to happen. Niskanen isn't defensively good enough to anchor a D pair, especially playing with a guy that take so many offensive liberties like Green.

Lol I can't wait until Orpik feels like he needs to earn that paycheck, prove he's a leader in the room and lays out a couple superstars.

I have no doubt this contract will suck at the end but I'll bet the Caps defense looks night and day compared to Oates hockey.

No way in hell the Ducks make that trade.

He does hit. Occasionally. And some of them are big. But that is about all the toughness he can muster anymore.

I'm thinking this is a summer 2016 buyout. I would be shocked if he made it the whole way through that contract.

So the Caps would have signed him for 27.5M and then would give him away 2 weeks later while retaining 12.5M of that contract? All that before he even had the chance to play?

What planet are you living on? Is this serious?

I am pretty sure he will be criticized with each and every mistake

I know it is frowned upon to trade a guy you just signed but

If you trade him to a team that has a a shot at the playoffs ( just like the Caps)
It might be best for Orpik and the Caps

Would Orpik at 3M be attrative to a team that needs some toughness
(imo) he just is not worth 5.5 M but at 3M as a 4th or 5th D-Man he might be of intrest to some teams

I am well aware of the Caps need to add toughness to the blueline but I just don't think Orpik at 5.5M is the answer

Orpik still gets paid the same 5.5M and is only traded to a playoff contender
I don't think it is an outrage after all it is a business

what if the Caps packaged Orpik and Green in a trade with Anaheim for Silfverberg and Karlsson
Correct.

The Caps signed Orpik to an overlong and expensive contract, because they believe in him. They have an overwhelming surplus of belief in him. So of course they aren't going to trade him.

This makes as much sense as the myriad Mike Green proposals that ignore the Capitals' emphatic statements about him this offseason.

Orpik, Niskanen, Green, Alzner, Carlson... none of those five players is going to be traded this summer.

I expect that they are going to play Orpik in a steadily declining role for two/three years and then buy him out. It's also quite possible that they will be vastly overplaying a player who fills a useful role on the team, at least for a couple of years.
