Seriously. We should remind him to ignore the fact that the whole "only playing in Toronto" thing came from Rangers camp to begin with because it contradicts his agenda.

Right! Been watching these for years. Guy was a stud blueliner that left and on his return, just hasn't been the same. Its a shame really.

Would rather him over Hunwick, that's for sure!

Kid of odd of Leafs to nominate him for Masterton and then not re-sign him.

Who else on the Leafs would it have been then?

I doubt he really attempted to get a spot on an NHL, TBH. It was probably Leafs or bust. And I'm not saying that as a Leafs homer who thinks Toronto is some amazing hotspot for UFAs, since it obviously is the opposite.

Ranger, for whatever quirky reason, really only wanted to play in T.O.

I think at this point he probably just wants to play hockey in a place where he can easily avoid the spotlight, and there isn't as much pressure and competitiveness.

But that's just my baseless speculation.

I feel though, that Ranger might be one of the people Shanahan identified as a "culture change" target.

Given all the hype when he signed. I figured he would be gone soon. The guy just isn't much of an NHLer.

Him and Fraser would have been a killer bottom pairing on the Oilers.

Ranger played like a solid #5 at the end of the season, surprised Toronto didn't bring him back cheap as a #7. Plus there were reports he didn't want to play anywhere but Toronto and last I check, Switzerland is not in Toronto

Kind of pissed the leafs didnt re-sign him. Played pretty well after a rocky start to last season.

That being said I would do the exact same thing if I were in his position.

Relatively speaking, it's sad but true. lol

We'll see what impact learning to yodel has on his foot speed and if he finds his way from the wilderness. Again.

On a side note, it's good to see he is willing to play hockey even though he could not get a contract with the Leafs (or possibly other NHL teams).

It's odd to think at one time that Brian Lawton in 2009 was offered Claude Giroux from the Flyers to trade for Paul Ranger, which was turned down by the Lightning. It's sad to see a top 4 defenseman decline this much after he left the NHL.
How funny would it be if they were allowed to add an "s" around the back of the armpit at a 45 degree angle to make it look like it fell?

We saw some flashes of old in him near the end of the season

I really liked him. I wish him the best of luck

Moving far away implies to me he's doing better in regards to whatever it was that had him take a break before. I hope that is true! Good luck in Switzerland!

I may be alone on this, but I really didn't think he was very good at all as a Leaf. He chased the play. He wasn't moving very well. He wasn't physical enough. His offensive tools were below average. I would have gone to Switzerland too. What a great life he will have there.

As a Leaf fan, I expect more, though. Good luck Paul! He may not be an NHL player at this point but I still wish him luck in the Swiss league.

Probably simple a financial move with more money available to him there than here.

Based on almost every post but a few leaf fans saying Ranger is terrible and isn't an NHLer, I can confidently say that you are alone.

Was great to see him come back from hiatus. Total speculation, but perhaps the massive amount of travelling in NHL/AHL doesn't suit the guy. Switzerland is tiny so minimises that.

That would surprise me. He was very professional, humble and team-oriented, and when things got tough for the team he upped his game more than any other player except perhaps Gardiner.

Could not stand watching this player play. Literally does nothing well and takes the most useless and unnecessary penalties.

Bye lol.

Ranger, I thought was a pretty decent bottom pairing defenceman, physical and decent defensively.

What's Dreger doing nowadays? Vacation? Didn't see him on TSN lately.

+1

Only one member remaining from the trio of terror (Franson, Fraser, Ranger)

Yup, and playing in Switzerland is 100X better than playing in some small AHL town.
