I'll tell you what made me say...okay, he's not ready for the C.

After the hit, when he was out for a while with an injury, he returned and played like crap. He looked confused and made a ton of mistakes. It really took some time for him to regain confidence.

Sure he's a great defenseman, but right there he certainly didn't look like a leader, he had more than enough trying to sort out his own game.

Come on, man. Do you really believe he was 100% when he came back from injury? He absolutely wasn't and it shows. I saw more physical errors than mental errors.

I love that when a guy comes back, most likely early, from an injury and doesn't play well, he's labeled "confused" and "not a leader."

He certainly sorted out his own game after like 10 games, which isn't a lot of time.

That's understandable, but keep in mind a few things:

1. He got hurt at the end of the season and then came back to hockey against a physically tough opponent in the playoffs

2. There's no way he was 100% when he came back

When a guy comes back from an injury, no matter how slight, it is expected that he might need a few games to get back in the swing of it. Mac wasn't his usual self in the beginning, but as the playoffs dragged on he came back in full force. I think drawing the conclusion that he's a poor leader because he needed a few games to get back to normal is invalid.

I just don't see a correlation. Its not like he was being lazy or had a bad attitude.

Has McD been a captain at any level?

Staal captained his junior team and has been an alternate for us since 2010.

Once Staal is locked up (which I expect will happen before the season starts), give the C to a guy who we know can handle it, and let McD focus on meeting the already massive expectations resting on him.

He was the sole captain of Wisconsin his last year.

I hope Stepan gets an A.

Don't really care who gets the C. I was excited when Cally got the C, then watching this board turn on him and then his trade soured the whole thing.

Glass for C?

Legitimate question here, is there an example of another team now or recently having all three letters worn by D-men?

I also believe that Staal should get the C if he extends. It wont hurt Mack to be groomed in under Staal.

Cally turned on the Rangers and the fans.
He got TOO greedy and stubborn about $ PLUS years PLUS NMC.

'Team first' and 'win first' now seem like just an act.

I expected him to do as Dustin Brown did, approach team about a fair deal, where he didn't need every dollar, every drop of blood.

I loved Cally until this spring; then he turned his back on the season, on his teammates, on the fans, and on his legacy.
He put himself first.
It just cannot be denied or spun another way.

He turned down NYR's $30M+ offer.

Just 3 20-goal seasons,
only 1 season with more than 23 goals.
No season with more than 25 assists.

He turned down NYR's $30M+ offer.

Good luck in Tampa, Cally.

The board started hating on him long before he got traded.

Mcdonagh is a monster who is young, on a long contract and was a warrior all playoff long. He should be the next captain without a doubt.

It's either MSL or McD. Outside shot at Girardi.

I had a dream last night it was Girardi with Step and McD with the A. I've been having some weird dreams lately.

There's no way Stepan and Hank are in the running for captaincy.

I would say Girardi, Staal, and McD are the front-runners.

I wouldn't mind MSL getting the captaincy for possibly his last year in the league. Give McD (or whoever) another year to learn under a solid Cup-winning veteran.

When do they stop being "just a kid" though? McD's 25. 18 would certainly be a kid. Hell even 22 seems like a kid to me now. Staal turned 27 this year, I don't think anyone would be calling him a kid. Girardi just turned 30 this year and that doesn't seem too far off from 25. At 25, I feel he's in that "separate the men from the boys" stage and that he's separated himself last season. But like I said and even if that is the case, I wouldn't mind seeing MSL as the captain so McD has another year to grow overall.

If Staal is interested in staying long-term, I think you give it to him. If not, it's between McDonagh and Girardi, with DG being the front-runner, IMO.

I think all signs point to Ryan McDonagh. I personally didnt love the idea when I first heard about it last year but I do have to admit I like the idea that he is a franchise player and he deserves it

Lacks ability to lead yet rick Nash support him being a captain.. I guess Lidstrom lacked the ability to lead to
