Mess on ESPN.com

ESPN hockey coverage might be woeful, but they are great at making sports seem more important than it really is. Thus, they are well placed for a moment like the Captain's retirement.

Interestingly, there's a list of the most beloved of New York athletes. Naturally I voted for Mess (though I did almost put in a boost for Phil Simms). Vote and see for yourself who's top.

I have to say Ruth, Mantle, or Joe Dimaggio. Gehrig never had the popularity altho he was about as good as Ruth, and probably the best guy out of the three.

I loved Mess, but no way is he the 2nd most beloved NY athlete of all time.

Its hard in a town that hosts the Yankees to get anyone to see past the pinstripes.

Also the fact that Mess wasnt 'home grown' may make some feel that he's not 'one of us' either.

nice to see Adam get a mention though.

Wow Messier over Mantle? NYC was Mantle Crazed for more than 20 years, its hard not to see Mantle 1 or 2 on that list... but hey, i guess a different generation voted.

Exactly. That's the problem with all of these espn polls - guys like Mantle and Jim Brown (I won't even go into players further back like Walter Johnson) get totally hosed compared to where they should be if you were actually comparing each player based on his performance relative to the competition of his era.

(I realize that in this case we're talking about adulation rather than performance - the same principal applies.)
