@GeorgeRichards NHL fought for Coyotes with a crappy lease. Panthers have a sweetheart deal. Not going anywhere soon.

When does the lease run out for the Panthers with the BB&T centre?

I have the year 2028 stuck in my head.

This isn't a new story, nothing has changed since March, don't worry yet.

Besides somebody may shoot Travis with a tranquilizer dart thinking he's bigfoot.

Also the Panthers bring a lot to the local economy. You'd see a big drop in the money spent around the arena on gameday. The restaurants around the arena are going to take a hit as is the Sawgrass mall. Only time I go to that place is before a game and you always see people in there with jerseys on the day of the game.

Thought the same. Gary's not gonna let 3 teams move under his watch, doesn't want 2.

This team has been 'relocating' for 18 years, ever since we lost in the finals.

I'm not worried and neither should you. When the consultant looks at how big of a loss have an empty arena would be 43 nights out of the year and the amount it would cost in contract and attorneys fees to break lease agreement, the panthers are not going anywhere.

Was slightly concerned upon first read, not at all this time. Just leveraging by both sides, team is staying put.

Meh... someone remind me about this in October when the results of the study are ready from the "consultant". I'm sure both sides will work it out in the end.

You guys are awesome. I got pretty nervous when I read the article but after reading your responses I feel much better. I can't wait until this team starts winning so we can put this relocation crap to rest.

Any time I hear someone talk about how South Florida can't be a hockey market. I just show them the rats from 96.

When this team starts winning, fans will show.

So are you saying if breaking the lease costs too much, owner and NHL should cover Panthers' losses?
If they break the lease, pay the hefty payment to county, it means that county will have virtually dept free arena.

Good to see the county taking a harder stance and calling the "relocation" bluff that was alluded to when the team asked for money this last time. The consultant will give them enough ammo to not give in. I don't see the team getting much money at all, maybe some help on the insurance premiems but not much else.

I'm reminded of a comment I once quoted on twitter:

"they should take them and move them to some obscure canadian city where they too will be poorly run and not make the playoffs"

That being said of course this is a money issue. But no one should panic at this time. You've all seen what the Coyotes went through and they have it much worse than us, not to mention a history of no real success at all (even we have won a Conference Final before). Everyone take a breath because the Panthers won't leave that easily.

A lot of people are scared after what happened to Atlanta, that was a very specific situation, in that they could find no viable owner for the team. Well, the Panthers have managed to find owners in the worst of years and have a new one now.

On top of that, we know what happens when this team does well, the fans show up and money is made (not to mention how profitable the arena itself is). So far, the county has lost just about every battle they've had with the Panthers...I mean I can't believe they actually ponied up the money for a new scoreboard but there it is.

Here is a link to the article from back in January which breaks down what the Panthers are asking for those who may have missed it:

http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/201...s-organization

Yormark said the 2 percent tourism bed tax created to cover the county's costs for the arena has generated millions more than expected, and it's that pot of money he's eyeing. The tax is levied on overnight visitors staying in Broward hotels.

The $185 million arena, which opened in 1998, was built with public financing for then-Panthers owner H. Wayne Huizenga. Broward leaders were sold on the controversial arena deal with promises that profits would return to the taxpayers. That has so far happened only once.

The current arrangement has the county paying $8 million a year toward the debt for arena construction. Another $2 million comes from state funds, and the Panthers pay $4.5 million. The Panthers organization also pays for maintaining and insuring the facility.

Under the proposed change, for the 14-year balance of the current contract:

•The Panthers would shed the $4.5 million annual payment; it would be picked up by the county.

•The county would contribute $500,000 a year toward maintenance, and would pay any of the property insurance tab that exceeds $1 million.

•The Panthers would swap the land it has rights to build on, 12 acres south of the arena, in favor of 22 acres on the arena's north side, where the Panthers hope a casino-hotel or some other development could be built and brought onto the tax rolls.

•The Panthers would immediately repay $10.6 million in loans the county granted them in recent years.

•The Panthers would continue contributing $500,000 a year to the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

•The Panthers would commit to investing in hockey team payroll "at a level competitive with the rest of the National Hockey League.''

If the bed tax was created to pay for the arena then why shouldn't more of it go towards paying it off?

It's not over yet for Coyotes, currently City is giving them annually $15 million (to manage arena, Panthers are paying rent, which they are trying to remove). Coyotes get full revenue sharing (Panthers $6 or $9 million?), Coyotes have a credit line from NHL (Panthers should get same).
Still Coyotes are losing money and like it was mentioned earlier in this thread, if losses reach $50 million by certain year, their lease will be null and void and they can relocate.

I posted this in the BOH, but no one answered, so I'll try you. Again, hypothetically speaking, if they don't get the money in October, I don't see that as being a clear sign the team is done, It just opens up the possibility. Viola would still need to pay a lot to break the lease and I'm assuming the NHL would intervene. I don't get the correlation of not getting this money= automatic relocation.
