Last Word On Sports: Best of the Rest (FINAL UPDATE)

Hello everyone,

LastWordOnSports.com has just started a series today that will last 30 days. Best of the Rest covers every team, one a day, and names one player that is not currently in the Hall of Fame at the moment and we make a strong case for why they should be in the future. Since we are going by alphabetical order, today we start with the Anaheim Ducks.

http://lastwordonsports.com/2014/07/...s-paul-kariya/

Note: All teams that have relocated are included in their current team's location (i.e.: The Arizona Coyotes will also have the history of the former Winnipeg Jets. The current Winnipeg Jets will have the history of the Atlanta Thrashers, and so on)

You're going to make a case as to why a Blue Jacket or a Predator should be in the HOF???

I hope you don't cheat and use Fedorov and Forsberg...

No, no. We have set some rules to who qualifies for what team. Outside the obvious "retired for minimum 3 years", each player selected will have to have played a significant role for the team. So Lindros is not eligible for the Leafs, for example.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Just on top off my head, is Kariya likely going to be the biggest name on that list?

Hard to think of an Oiler who should be in but isn't.... unless they want Dave Semenko.

(Maybe Doug Weight?)

Kevin Lowe, Doug Weight, Ryan Smyth and Esa Tikkanen. Not saying they should be in the HoF but they are Oilers best of the rest.

Hopefully the notion in the Housley article that Andreychuk "is looking to be inducted soon", is not really "The last word on Sports" after all. God knows if i would not take Housley before Andreychuk.

I don't know. Even though I don't even like him very much and IMO was probably one of the least naturally talented 'star' players I've ever seen (skating, puckhandling), Cashman seemed to be a really important player on the post-Espo/Orr Bruins in the late 1970s. Exceptional corner-man for Esposito too, of course.

Yeah, I'd have to think Brind'Amour comes before Beeker.

Yeah, Middleton and Hitchman over Cashman, Brind'amour over Verbeek. In my opinion, at least.

I don't think either Housley or Andreychuk deserves the Hall, but one is as good as the other, I guess. And it's not like Hasek is controversial.

Honestly because the criteria of this list is people eligible for the hall but not voted in it's easy to see why half the names on this list are likely not great hall candidates still a nice shout out to guys who were top players for their franchise but will likely never make it in.

Any chance we will see non-player (builder) candidates from CBJ or Nashville as they really grew the sport of hockey around them despite one not being tremendously successful on-ice and the other being in an odd market for the sport (lots of respect to the front offices of both).

There wasn't much to choose from but you can't really argue against Foote for this.
