Training Camp: Day 2 - Dumont Shines

Scrimmage time...

Red versus white...
White wins in a shootout 4-3...
Dumont had two goals, Drury had two as well...

Line of Vanek-Briere-Dumont was impressive...

Nice fight between McMorrow and Peters

on the goaltenders...

Noronen - played great. made a few nice saves.

Miller - looked a little shaky, didn't stand on his head.

Dennis - solid in net. If they put him in Rochester, he won't be a liability, IMO

Stirling - played great. made a few nice saves.

Biron did not play at all.

On the skaters...

Chris Drury was all over the place. Played great, scored a nice goal.

Doug Janik WILL NOT make the team. He looked terrible. On one shift he could've gotten called for a penalty about 8 times. Got burned a few times. A mess.

Vanek wasn't spectacular. Got a couple assists. Still adjusting to the faster pace.

Tim Connolly actually looked pretty good. I'm excited to see how he plays in his first game.

Marek Zagrapan was almost invisible. You can tell he's at least two years away from a roster spot. Isn't ready yet, but did show flashes of potential.

John Adams played pretty good. Nothing spectacular. Made a few mistakes, but the mistakes were outnumbered by the nice plays he made. Looked even skinnier in person. He needs to put on some weight, but if they don't sign him to play in Rochester, I'll be disappointed. He played better than Janik and Paetsch today.

Dylan Hunter looks like he's definitely gonna get a shot in Roch when he's done in junior. Definitely has a role in the organization somewhere.

Andrej Sekera looks like he could be a decent player. Keep an eye on him.

If you guys want thoughts on anyone else, let me know.

Scoring
WHITE 4, RED 3 (shootout)

White: Gaustad, Drury, Drury (PS)
Red: Dumont 2, Fitzpatrick (PS)

Shootout:
White vs Stirling
Hecht GOAL
Mair X
Drury X

Red vs Dennis
Dumont X
Vanek X
Briere X

Penalty Shots (in 2nd period, all penalties were awarded penalty shots)
Fitzpatrick scores on Dennis
Zagrapan stopped by Stirling
Numminen misses vs Stirling
Pominville misses vs Stirling
Drury scores on Stirling
Peters stopped by Dennis

They play two halves of 25 minutes each...penalties in the first half are 1 minute long and in the second half, they are a PENALTY SHOT....

Noronen shut out the Red team in his half...Biron looked ok...
The other goalie for the Red was Sterling...looked like a rookie...

Noronen was the most steady, but didn't see many shots...

So, after 1 day, were still at square one, with no-one taking the reins...

Camp, Day 2

I managed to make it down to the rink for the second half of today's scrimmage and had a few things to take away:

- Mancari got the the better of Kalinin when Tri tried pinching. Kalinin looked a little bit uncomfortable after getting popped, but then came right back out... and got again.

- Connolly was digging hard to get back on the backcheck on at least two occassions. He did seem to be floating at all.

- Tallinder looked pretty good at both ends of the rink -- including a couple of shifts on RD.

- Vanek-Briere-Dumont looked dangerous every shift I saw, including a nice short-pass from Vanek for a goal in tight

- Hunter did not look as good as the player I have seen in London. He needs to get clicking soon if he's thinking of a tryout deal.

- Zagrapan will not be sticking without stepping up

- Pominville looked dangerous on a few chances

It appears that contrary to popular (or at least Prospect Board) belief, he can indeed pass the puck.

Also a nod should go to Adams. I thought he looked about on par with Janik and Fitzie, which isn't a bad thing for someone we could see signed as depth to the Amerks.

From all the games I've seen, he can put a touch on the pass and it is pretty accurate. It isn't his natural inclination and I don't know that he has that playmaker vision. It isn't why he's around but he can and probably will pass it if it is the obvious right play to make.

I've been saying for a while that Vanek's passing skills are underrated. I saw him make some amazing passes last year.

Vanek can pass very well. Its not until last season in rochester that his goal totals where much higher than his assists. He was always a decent playmaker in college and even at Sioux Falls.

Season Team Lge GP G A Pts PIM GP G A Pts PIM
1999-00 Sioux Falls Stampede USHL 35 15 18 33 12 3 0 1 1 8

2004-05 Rochester Americans AHL 74 42 26 68 62 5 2 3 5 10
Maybe he just likes to finish more often than others? I dunno. He is a decent passer.

I know I was certainly impressed with his passing compared to what I've read/heard when I watched him both his final year with the Gophers and last season in Rochester.

vanek on Shootout

Although he did not score, I was overly impressed with the presence he came at the goalie with. he made 2 deke moves and just looked so solid on his feet.....the first time I have seen someone skate like that in a long time......This guy is going to be something special for sure......Impressed me very much with his hustle and "quicks"

I asssume you meant he didn't seem to be floating. That's good news if it is. I expect a lot from Connolly. He still has something to prove.

Also, can you explain about the Zagrapan comment. Is it he's not trying? Not enough skill? Too inexperienced?

Thanks, great job guys with the reviews, keep them coming!!

Hey thats great to hear that Buffalo has some up and coming stars especially vanek, they are in a hard division. In 03' they made a strong push with some new pieces now and maybe a step up from Afinigenov they can do some great things.

Very true - Fruedian typo there. I thought Connolly was busting his tail throughout the portion of the scrimmage I watched. He looked stronger on his skates, certainly, and was dogged on the backcheck. Granted, he's also in a numbers game at centre and has to impress or may not be in the lineup (or in town).

As for Zagrapan... he looked like a lot of first timers at camp: a bit lost, a little unsure of what himself. The skills are obviously there, but hey, the kid is only 18 and I wasn't expecting he'd be blazing his way onto the team. And it's also early, he may take a few days to settle in -- which also usually means that by the time he's comfortable he'll be back in the Q'.

I'm looking forward to hearing about how the goalie situation develops. This should continue to get very interesting as camp progresses.
