Blues-Flyers

Unrealistic I know. Just for fun though

To STL: claude giroux, Braydon Coburn

To PHI: Alex Pietrangelo, david Backes

Fire away

Neutral fan, but that seems awful for the Blues.

Pietrangelo and Giroux are close in value, but then Backes >> Coburn.

Blues lose this trade.

StL doesn't swing on this one unless Flyers add. Backes isn't as good as Giroux, but the difference between Pietrangelo and Coburn is far greater than Backes and Giroux.

I'm not saying he's a stud or anything but Coburn gets pretty underrated around here.

Some people see him as just a cap dump and I don't get it.

yikes. just yikes. would be robbery here. don't think coburn is as good as pietrangelo, and backes is an excellent forward, but he ain't on giroux's level.

edit: i misread this terribly.

Rather be the team overpaying for UFA centers than #1 d-men going forward. We might not draft a Giroux, but we sure as hell aren't getting another Pietro again. Also Backes... captain...yadda yadda.

The difference between Coburn and Pietrangelo and the difference between Giroux and Backes, is about even. I love Backes, good ole American kid, but he's not on the same level as Giroux!

Since the consensus is that Giroux and Pietro are even in value, but Backes > Coburn. What C would STL send back to make the value more even then?

I guess that was my logic behind it, both teams downgrade at a position of strength, but get that #1C or #1D they've been looking for. IMO Stastny is more of a 2C.

Yea STL's Defense wouldn't be as good as it is now, but JBo, Shattenkirk, and Coburn is still a damn good top 3

Change Pieterangelo for JBo and it's much closer in value

No thanks. Giroux is the best piece in the deal, but the difference between Giroux and Pietrangelo is smaller than the gap between Backes and Coburn. I'm not interested in moving either Pietrangelo or Backes to begin with. We are built on our defense, so losing Pietrangelo and Backes is a big blow.

Giroux > Pietrangelo
Coburn < Backes

But what's the point? Seems outlandish, and it doesn't do anything other than rearranging some pieces...

St,Louis doesn't do this even if they are getting the best player in the deal in Giroux.

No thanks. The need for a number one defenseman is not worth losing a top five forward. Stay the course with Morin, Sanheim, Ghost, Hagg and Alt.

Wouldn't move Giroux for Pietrangelo and wouldn't move Coburn for Backes. No thank you.

Franchise 1D and good 1C for franchise 1C and what, top 4 dman? It's just not equivalent

You're underrating Coburn and (slightly) overrating Backes, IMO. Coburn is a solid #2, he's just not a number 1. He's a slightly lesser Bouwmeester.

This thread is silly. The value, in absolute terms, isn't that far off--you can debate it either way, but no one from either side seems interested. Giroux is the best and most valuable piece in the deal. Coburn is the least valuable. Pietrangelo and Backes are somewhere in between.

You're leaving out the part where Backes adds about as much defense to the team as Coburn does. Giroux doesn't do any of that. It's not all about forwards = more points for us; d-man = less points for opponents.

I'm really not sure what you are trying to say. Obviously Backes is a better defensive forward than Giroux--though that gap is no where near the one that separates them offensively.

On the other hand, the gap in defensive skills between Coburn and Pietrangelo is not nearly as big as you are implying. Coburn is a very good defensive defenseman. He just brings, well, nothing offensively. That's why he's always been and will always be a #2.
