When is Subban eligible for UFA status?

Very interesting. One of those deals where I'm not really interested in the cap hit, more the term. A 2 year deal would be pretty upsetting for Montreal fans considering this.

I cant think of a reason for them to play hard ball with him, 8.5 is definitely within reason.

He's asking for 8.5 for one RFA year, maybe he's asking for $12M or a max deal long term?

It's a real shame Toronto tied up so much money in Phaneuf and Clarkson and pretty much killed that dream.

Would have been crazy if the Leafs landed Stamkos and Subban July 1st 2016.

That doesn't materially change anything. By not giving Subban the long-term deal he wants right now, Montreal is effectively giving Subban the opportunity to hit UFA.

Will he take it? I don't know. Probably not. But I do know for damn sure that Bergevin is making a monumental mistake by allowing that opportunity to exist.

Newport has done not a thing wrong with the Subban contract. Bergevin is trying to call Subban's bluff. The problem is Subban is holding a flush and Bergevin has a crap hand. It's idiotic.

Term is already set at one year, though that doesn't provide MTL with much relief either.

Subban can elect arbitration again next offseason (per the CBA), and is basically guaranteed to at least match this year's award anyway.

Wasn't aware that it was already set at 1 year. Well, that's good news then. This is why I love this website.

My uneducated opinion from afar: MTL likes, maybe really likes, Subban but doesn't LOVE him. And you have to LOVE someone at 8 x $8-9M+ per.

More importantly, I guess, IF Subban doesn't feel the love from MTL, how eager is he to re-up there for eight years? Gonna be interesting.

I thought players could only elect 1 time for arbitration? or was that owner.

Teams can only elect it once. Players can do so as many times as they are eligible RFAs.

I agree with 12 or 13 million being too much. 10.5-11 mill is pushing it but thats the price you pay when you gamble on a bridge contract and lose.

I can't imagine what they think his value on a long term contract is. Perhaps they are stupid?

What? How can they not love him? He's one of the best defensemen in the game today. A genuine game breaking, franchise #1 defenseman. What are they thinking? Even if they'd rather have him at $6.5 like Karlsson and Pietrangelo, you don't let a franchise player walk over $2 million dollars.

I don't get it. Pay the man.

So everyone used to talk **** about Subban and how bad he is and now everyone agrees that he is worth 10m+? How is that credible?
