I say its a toss up between Marian Gaborik and Jason Chimera. Gaborik won fastest speed at all star competition, and Chimera won fastest speed at the Oilers skill competition, but that was on Edmonton's ice, generally acknowledged as the best ice in the NHL. I have to wonder how Gaborik would do on Edmonton's ice.
Hands down would go to Pavel Bure in full flight...but what I am looking for is just straightaway speed. So far I have the likes of Chimera, Koltsov, maybe even Havlat could be in this for straightaway speed.
Well, Edmonton ice or not, you can't argue with cold hard facts. Chimera broke Gartner's record in the Oiler's skills competition, so my vote goes to him.
Although I agree that Modano's speed is very underrated.
From what I've seen and this isn't being a homer at all. Koltsov is the fastest person I've seen on skates. Speed and acceleration I don't think anyone comes close. Come on, in a preseason game the puck was not 10 feet from Fred Braithwaite, Koltsov was in the neutral zone and he beat Brathwaite to the puck, that's acceleration. He splits the D before they get into the zone half the time. The guy's speed is insane, it's just a matter of controling the puck for him.
