I say its a toss up between Marian Gaborik and Jason Chimera. Gaborik won fastest speed at all star competition, and Chimera won fastest speed at the Oilers skill competition, but that was on Edmonton's ice, generally acknowledged as the best ice in the NHL. I have to wonder how Gaborik would do on Edmonton's ice.

Konstantin Koltsov probably deserves mention here, too...

I am a homer, but when you include puckhandlings, control, acceleration, top speed, etc.. I pick Mike Modano just above Sergei Fedorov.

This is actually pretty important...sure, you can skate quickly, but can you skate quickly with the puck? Although in this area I'd give the nod to Sergei Samsonov.

skating quickly with puck

Hands down would go to Pavel Bure in full flight...but what I am looking for is just straightaway speed. So far I have the likes of Chimera, Koltsov, maybe even Havlat could be in this for straightaway speed.

Koltsov will be on an NHL roster on opening night, so I'd say he's eligible.

Jason Chimera for me, thankyouvery much. I conisder him the fastest skater in the NHL at full speed.

Sami Kapanen is the fastest player from full stop to full speed, but Jason's pure speed overall is the best.

You'll all be blown away when you see Koltsov on opening night. I hear they've fit him with old-timey pilot's goggles and a drag chute.

Shouldn't Rico Fata be on the list? All anyone ever says about him is how fast he is. He doesn't really do anything else.

There are alot of players who have outstanding top end speed at the NHL level, few though can handle the puck and make plays like Mike Modano.

Well, Edmonton ice or not, you can't argue with cold hard facts. Chimera broke Gartner's record in the Oiler's skills competition, so my vote goes to him.
Although I agree that Modano's speed is very underrated.

Acceleration is far more important than the one lap speed times.

A more important test as it related to hockey would be from blueline to blueline from a dead stop.

Getting to top speed in one or two strides is most important. It allows a forward to create separation.

From what I've seen and this isn't being a homer at all. Koltsov is the fastest person I've seen on skates. Speed and acceleration I don't think anyone comes close. Come on, in a preseason game the puck was not 10 feet from Fred Braithwaite, Koltsov was in the neutral zone and he beat Brathwaite to the puck, that's acceleration. He splits the D before they get into the zone half the time. The guy's speed is insane, it's just a matter of controling the puck for him.
