Help - Planning trip to San Jose for Outdoor Game

Hey Guys,

So like the rest of you I'm sure, I have some serious interest in going to see the Stadium Series game on the 21st. Being from Alberta, Canada though, it is going to take some extra planning so I am hoping you guys can help me out.

So this would be my first time making it down to San Jose. So I am initially thinking that I will fly down Friday, the 20th, go to the game Saturday, hang around the area for a few days and then catch the game against the Wings on Thursday, the 26th before flying back the 27th. I have not been to the Shark Tank yet either, so leaving San Jose and not experiencing a game there doesn't seem right!

My main concern is hotels. Any recommendations on some good value hotels? Obviously I would need a room for 7 nights, so I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Any other comments, concerns and questions would be greatly appreciated!

Basic "coming to SJ" thread.

Finding a hotel on 1st street (near airport) would provide you with VTA option to get to outdoor game.

Yes I would go for Hotels near SFO should be safe but affordable. People may disagree but there is much more to do in SF for your off days.
Depending on Traffic...
This will put you 15/20 minutes from Downtown SF
25/45 Minutes from Santa Clara(though i would consider Public transport for the game)
30/45 Minutes from Downtown San Jose.
You will need to get a rental car for the week to get around.

Awesome! Thanks for all the info guys!

EDIT: Having some trouble locating some decent hotels in the $100-150 range. Any recommendations would be great!

Do you have any ideas where in the area you're trying to stay?

Pretty sure the Courtyard Marriott in Palo Alto is like $130-140ish a night. There's a bunch of other places, just kind of depends where you want to stay.

I just went to hotels.com and did a quick search. If you are wanting to stay in the area near the stadium in Santa Clara or by the Sharks arena in San Jose, there are some options available for even under $100/night. Some that are less than a mile (easy walking distance) from SAP arena. Do a search for San Jose, and under the distance header, have it sort by SAP Center Center. It should be under the landmarks section of the popup.

Hey All, thanks again. I am hoping to stay somewhere downtown San Jose or close to Mineta Airport as it seems flights are cheaper to go there from Calgary than SFO. I guess I just want to make sure I am getting a decent quality hotel where I am not putting myself out of pocket. Doesn't need to be 4 or 5 stars, but can't have bed bugs either haha. Also, is there any areas in and around San Jose to be wary of when booking a hotel?

Don't stay on Monterey Rd. That's for night time illegal business activities. The cheap motels along North First are also places you should avoid. Next to the airport is the Double Tree. It's within walking distance to VTA light rail and halfway between Levis stadium and SAP center. It's also across the street from the Matrix Casino if you like that sort of thing.

It would suck for you to come out here just for the game to get cancelled due to rain. This is smack dab in the rainy season for here. I guess the league did not consider that January and February are the the months with the highest average rainfall for Santa Clara county.

So, if I read that right there is a 33% chance of any rain that day and an 50% percent chance that if it does rain it will be significant rain. It almost never rains all day here. I'd say the odds of the game being played are at least 80%
