LMHF Pre-season Game Report #1

"CAL-GARY SUCKS! CAL-GARY SUCKS! CAL-GARY SUCKS!" -LRT Station Oilers fans.

"Go Flames Go! Go Flames Go! Go Flames Go!" -30 or so Calgary fans that came in after the chant died down

"CAL-GARY SUCKS! CAL-GARY SUCKS! CAL-GARY SUCKS!" - Oilers fans drown out the Flames fans.

Wow....I knew people were hockey-starved but seriously wow, that was awesome. Great fun being at a sold-out preseason game. The reg. season is going to be insane, especially when Calgary or Vancouver are here, great stuff.

The only not so great stuff is that people seem to have forgotten how to walk in the concourse areas....UGH!

I was almost thinking something like this would happen tonight, pleasantly surprised that it did.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMNT- Hot Dog 'B' was clearly better than Hot Dog 'A' tonight. There was nothing 'A' about said dog's game, he just didn't play a full sixty, and his taste suffered, too bad!

Oh wait.....there were hockey players too!

PLAYER REPORTS

Members of the "I kinda stunk tonight" club. (note the kinda)

-Jani Rita-
Oh boy, just not looking right out there. He drove the net well.....once......and didn't look interested out there much at all. Him and Dicaz, who won't even get his own spot in this report despite decent work on the PK, weighed down Schremp all night. They're not as ready as he is, which says something very negative about Rita.

-Dan Smith-
Took a nice shot, but that was about it. He's not a 7th defencemen. Iffy reads, not very poised with the puck, just didn't like it.

-Marc-Andre Bergeron-
Tough call on him tonight, I liked the pass he made to Dvorak, beauty, and a couple other nice plays he made, but he coulda been better on the powerplay, and his 5-on-5 wasn't so hot. Nothing to worry about, I just expect more from him.

-Alex Semenov-
I'm a little worried about Alex, which I don't want to be because he needs to play well for us. He's always trying to avoid the new penalties, and in some cases not doing a good job and letting it affect his willingness to engage forwards and contain them. Nothing outwardly terrible tonight, but he's just not quite there right now, oh well.

-The line of Radek Dvorak-Shawn Horcoff-Ryan Smyth-
The line wasn't good tonight. They didn't really get anything done whatsoever. Individually in other areas they were not bad at all, although Horcoff and Smyth both missed wide-open gifts from Schremp. Radek showed alot more moxie than I'm used to from him in the pre-season. I don't think this combo is going to work out, they don't seem suited to each other. Here's hoping things get moved around.

-Cory Cross-
Kinda out of it, kinda slow, nothing horrendous just not what I expect out of Cory. He usually has more solid games than this one.

-------------------------------
Middle of the road
------------------------------

-Jarret Stoll-
Played with some go tonight, did well for himself on the point of the powerplay including a nice shot for a goal that can have the credit go to Smyth, Pronger, and Schremp mainly. Schremp for keeping the play alive a couple times, and making a nice pass to Horcoff, Pronger for commanding the respect he does from the opposition on the point and using it to his advantage, and Smyth for the nice screen. Can't score without the shot though, way to go Jarret.

-Raffi Torres-
Played hard-nosed solid hockey. Shoulda generated more offence than he did.

-Fernando Pisani-
Is rounding into a very nice player to have on the team. Certainly more confident and patient now, probably shoulda scored tonight though, which keeps him from the high grade.

-Danny Syvret-
He'll make it in a year or two. A little more nervous than a guy like Schremp, but fairly composed. Nice defensive play in OT I believe it was and nice passing of course. Needs to be a little more confident in his skating the puck up ice, he does it well and isn't taking advantage.

-JFJ and Georges-
Neither was great, neither was bad. JFJ is still a little slow for me for this team, hope he can grab another step or two. Georges wasn't as good in the corners as he needs to be, but I see some more jump than in years past.

-Todd Harvey-
Played a fairly solid game tonight. Other than that he's lost his shooting ability, he was very solid, very visibly vocal with his teammates, and out there making a difference. Nice to see!

---------------
Best of the Night

-Robbie Schremp-
He was good tonight despite being stuck with bad linemates 5-on-5. Made some magical plays on the PP. Just has this presence that screams "Put me in the NHL" out there right now. Too bad he didn't score in the shootout, or on a couple decent chances. Disappointed no one put away his rebounds and passes. He and Pronger make that PP go, there is no doubt.

-Chris Pronger-
Didn't even have to play that well to get here. His mere presence changes the dynamic of that powerplay and it's entirely visible. Really thought he was going to win it in the shootout.

-Mike Morrison-
GREAT game tonight from Mike. Probably shoulda been the first star, or at least ahead of Byron Ritchie......UGH! Several outstanding saves including a beauty recovery in the shootout. Well done Mike!

-JDD-
Way to jump that bench and keep the hair in place! See ya on the 21st!

-------------------------------------------------------

Well, I guess we're semi-official now. It'll be interesting to see how the white squad does on Sunday, I don't hold out as much hope. A tad alarmed at the lack of goals tonight, but it was just the first pre-season game, and our depth wasn't there to supply pressure. They are going to have a really hard time sending Robbie down if he keeps these kind of games up. There was maybe two plays he made that weren't quite right. Made so many nice passes, awesome.

People are insanely excited this year, I sure hope the team can come out the right way and get the people behind them early. Nothing like coasting behind a rabid fanbase to make things just a little easier.

Got to sit in some excellent seats tonight thanks to the best usher in Rexall Place. She's awesome, now if she'll just become LMHF#3......

My throat hurts already!

LMHF#1 out!

Meh, I agree with Schremp's first star.

I loved the one time on the PP where he passed it to Pronger, and had his stick up the whole time waiting for the return one-timer

He was the guy I was rooting for the most.

I likely exaggerate Laraque, but I was very impressed with his mobility, particularly compared to past training camps, and his tenacity in the back checking on the rush.

He wants the puck so bad, it's great. You love to see that in a young player.

I agree on Laraque being more mobile for sure. He looks a little leaner, and like he knows he needs to get after it. He's not being threatened by Winch, Rita, or Jacques or anyone so far either.

Was only able to catch the last half of the 3rd period through until Smytty ended the shootout with Rod & Morley. Caught a ride back from the salt mines with a buddy whose older vehicle’s radio was on the fritz. Kind of tired so it’s off to dreamland.

Thanx for the Game Report LMHF#1 and keep them coming!

Geez, this is the third time I had to type this post. Stupid Computer...

It was great to be back watching those guys again. Props to the crowd tonight, it actually almost felt like a playoff game. Gotta love it when we sell out pre-season games!

What is up with Jani Rita? He doesn't look good at all out there. I am not compleatly sure of his situation. Can we send him back to Finland if he just cant cut it? IMO, he isn't good enough for the team unless he steps it up big time.

I know that its only been one intersquad game and one pre-season game but some players arn't looking them their normal self so I am not too worried. Bergeron has been making some great plays and sometimes passes so well. Made a great play springing Dvorak out of the penalty box. All Dvorak needed was one more step and he would have been gone. However other times I was left thinking what Bergeron was thinking at certain times. Can't help but wonder what goes through his head... .

If Robbie can play like that all the time there is no way he can not be on this hockey team. Even though the powerplay was only 1 for 12, it looked so much smoother and once they get Hemsky (who I think will fit perfect on that line) on that line the Oilers should have a much improved powerplay. I think that going with Schremp, Hemsky, Smyth, Bergeron and Pronger will be very good. So much skill there its not even funny. LMHF#1 and I were talking about how it looks like we are actually using the whole zone on the powerplay for once!

Our PK was decent and I can't wait until cuts are made. It's sickening watching players like Nate Dicassmiro out there. After a year off could we not be giving these guys more of a chance to gel?

I can't remember the last time I have been this excited about a season. It should be good because this team has a lot of potential. Can't wait for Sunday either to see the rest of the bunch in an actual game.

Also SHOOTOUTS SUCK! Games should be decided by hockey. Not 2 aspects of the game...

Sorry LMHF#1 your not Ryan Seacrest no more LMHF#1 out lines

im pretty sure that the team is getting down to 40 players after sundays game.... so that should allow the vets to get some more playing time for the rest of the games..... and macT has already been quoted saying that they want to trim the roster quicker this year, to allow for the vets to get used to the new rules

Hmm, I thought I read somewhere that no more cuts will be made until after 4 games..Then more cuts 2 games later, then after the final 2 the last cuts would be made.

I thought I saw the same thing. Maybe it was Guy that said it here. (if not, sorry for pointing to Guy for the wrong reason.)

It's more than OK.

Once more posters define the resources they want to have accessible, and I become more accomplished at fabricating time, we'll be renovating the library. Till then... check out post #7.

Decent game considering the layoff. A couple things bothered me. First of all, Smytty butcherized a beauty cross ice feed on the PP and then dove on the goalie for a penalty killing what had been a very productive PP including the Schremp chance etc. Unfortunately Smytty took another goaltender interference penalty nullifying another PP later in the game. He did score a beauty in the shootout, but these are bad mistakesfor a guy like him to make. I realize it is preseason, but IMO very brutal plays by the last guy that should be making them. I also thought Horcoff looked much more poised and controlled on the ice. His performance wasn't spectacular, but I think, like others have said, that he has improved immensely over the lock out. I think he is capable of having a really solid season, and this coming from a guy who has always questioned his legitimacy as a #1, #2 centreman. All in all an average game against below average opponents.

I wonder what effect this impending fact is having on the egos of a couple statistical prognosticators adamant about a 25th picks chances of making the team anywhere near his 19th birthday?

Shyte happens, if he really is good enough to make it, its not a case of the believers being right and the naysayers being wrong... because nobody could really know, but the adamant side of the debate that assured they were correct were mostly on the nay-side... and its great to see the statistical tsunami with a bit of egg in its face sometimes... anomolies have a spot resreved in the dictionary for a reason!
