This is a move I could see the old flames management doing. I question the new management too. We got some young guys knocking at the door, I would prefer they get 5 to 10 game stints covering for injured guys rather than signing kaberle.

Flames were very generous with the young guys last year. Lots of them earned an nhl paycheck for a few weeks without even playing, or playing very little. Reward and a taste of the big dollars. See no reason to change this.

The Flames top 6 on D is set to start the year right now, (Giordano, Brodie, Russell, Smid, Wideman, Engelland)

I doubt the Flames want to keep Wotherspoon/Sieloff up as the number 7 d-man to start the year.

Cundari and Acolaste are two players that I could potentially see being the Flames number 7 d-man right now.

I kind of want the Flames to leave the 7th spot open for now and see if they can grab someone decent on waivers.

I'm stunned at how much interest this is generating around various team boards.

Kaberle was pretty much finished as a NHLer in the 2011-12 season. That was 3 years ago.

His contributions to the Habs tank that season were impressive.

Only a team looking to get McDavid should employ him this season.

first move by the new isles owners?

I wouldn't mind giving him a look in a tryout to see what his form looks like, but I doubt anybody signs him

There will be a bidding war in that case

Sens just signed a 30 yr old Clarke MacArthur for almost 5 mil per season for 5 yrs so i can't see why they wouldn't offer Kabs 4 mil per season for 3 yrs.

Some parts of Kaberle's game looked pretty decent in his finale with the Habs. Especially in that last year when he seemed to improve his fitness a bit... but they had to bubble wrap him so they could buy him out, and we never really got to see how that would pan out.

The fitness thing is the key, though. He's got the intelligence, he knows how to move the puck, and he'll never be anything but soft in his own zone. As long as he's fit enough to execute his game effectively, the intelligence ought to outweigh the softness, as before. At times it did, even in his tenure with the Habs. But "at times" isn't really what you want in an NHL defenseman. Especially if you are paying him big bucks like the Habs were.

I wouldn't see any harm in a tryout contract, anyway. If he has suddenly committed himself to fitness, it could pan out.

But yeah, any team out there should sign Diaz first, regardless of that.

The only attribute Kaberle has at the NHL level now is passing. He can still make a good outlet pass but his transition game is shot, he has utterly no foot speed and is mess in his own zone. You have a prospect better than him at this point.

I could see Detroit signing him due to having a soft spot for vets.

I didn't really notice him at the Olympics. Was he playing? As a Leafs fan I can remember when he was our best defensemen and being upset at him being dealt.

I saw in one of the rumor mills of possibly either Detroit or New Jersey being linked to Kaberle. Detroit needs RHD not another LHD so I can't see him being a fit in Detroit unless he can play pretty strong on the right side.

Could see him come to the Leafs camp on a tryout.

Doesn't hurt.

If he makes your team, be depressed about the state of your defense. Very depressed.

Not to say that he's still a great Dman, but he averaged 33 points over 82 games in the worst years of his career after he left Toronto. Those are decent numbers. If his heart is back in it, I'd be surprised if nobody at least gave him a PTO.

So you'd be okay with Kaberle taking ice time away from the youngsters? those up and comers like Percy,Finn,Granberg etc that we've all been waiting for? If Kaberle makes the Leafs, or any team for that matter, I'll be shocked. This guy was done as a legit NHL player several seasons ago, it's not like he's going to get better. The concussions ruined him.
