Here's the thing. Ryan Malone played decently well when healthy. The problem was his health. This team has the depth to cover if he only plays 40 games. The question that I ask myself is "will Ryan Malone help this team for 40 games?" To me, I think they answer is yes.
Ideally he would be a guy who gets some time when we need the size, and someone like Lombardi gets time when we need more speed. Both can kill penalties if necessary.

He's a good dude despite the drug issues and I know he wants another crack at a cup. I also know NY was on his short list when he was a FA.

Malone never reached free agency because his rights were traded to Tampa Bay before he became a free agent. He will 35 years old in December. Injuries. Age.

This^, + other baggage cited = big no.

Keep contract slot that would be extended available for someone else in case better player becomes available.

Ruling Malone out because of the coke thing is hysterical. Do you really think our kids (or any young rich kid) in NY needs a guy like him to find coke if they want to? Or do you expect him to deal out of the locker room?

They just need to go to a Knick's game and talk to our good ol' buddy JR Smith if they need some top-notch snow.

Back on topic, the Hayes signing definitely gives us more diversity through the lineup. I'm also curious to see how Bodie develops this year. I think he can be a Krug/DeKeyser-esque for us.

Have you ever had a co-worker who is addicted? It's disruptive and could easily affect chemistry as the situation plays out. I just don't see why it's necessary to add that uncertainty to the team.

Absolutley agreed.

I mean, it's not like the Rangers have any BAD history with players with coke problems, right?

Is this a serious post? Obviously if someone wants to be a drug addict, they will be, but to act like someone who has a problem with drugs already, can't influence younger kids, is ABSURD.

Peer pressure is an actual thing that exists. I'm sorry, but I'm not taking a chance like that on a player of Malone's caliber. If this was a good player, I'd say sure, but the fact that the guy is a 4th liner with recent drug issues is an absolute no. There are better and SAFER options out there.

Why are we talking about Ryan Malone? There's zero reason to think the Rangers will pick him up.

I don't want Malone because he is washed up. Coke incident is just the nail in the coffin.

I wouldn't hate Malone as the 13th forward.

Giving him a tryout for camp doesn't hurt anyone.

Many have pencilled Lombardi in as the 13th F, and we have no idea how he'll perform back at the NHL level. Malone could be a smart, no risk, depth move. Again, giving him a tryout to prove himself in camp doesn't hurt anyone.

At the deadline:

JT Miller, Danny Kristo, Conor Allen, 2nd 2015 for Bobby Ryan (UFA rental) and 3rd 2015

Kreider Stepan St. Louis
Ryan Brassard Zuccarello
Hagelin Hayes Nash
Glass Moore Stempniak
Lombardi

or

Kreider Stepan St. Louis
Nash Brassard Zuccarello
Hagelin Hayes Ryan
Glass Moore Stempniak
Lombardi

or
(For those who are balance-obsessed)

Kreider Stepan St. Louis
Ryan Brassard Nash
Hagelin Hayes Zuccarello
Glass Moore Stempniak
Lombardi

That's good value for Ryan, but it isn't wise to move Miller (cheap, cost-controllable asset) for a UFA rental in a position of relative strength (Wing).

Honestly a Malone type player would be a big help to this team.

Wouldn't trade JT Miller alone for Ryan.

Addict? Someone getting busted for possession once hardly means they are an addict. The court systems want them to say they are though, sending them to 12 step programs etc.
Coke is very much a recriational (? Spelling) drug for the rich an famous. I wouldnt compare a millionare doing some coke at a party to a 5 dollar hooker with a crack habit.

The agenda has reached new hights with the signing of Hayes. "A rookie can't handle minutes", yet a player who is older and has zero professional experience can suddenly handle a position he hasn't exclusively played in some time.

St. Louis CAN'T BE on the "3rd" line with some rookie...but Nash aparently can be...

J.T. Miller is going to be a solid player. He has size but doesn't depend on it. Hayes won't be able to force his will onto professionals the way he did with amateurs in the NCAA because of his size and weight. And honestly he may not have the hands to play at the NHL level, only time will tell. Miller on the other hand has already been a PPG player at the professional level, and had he not injured his shoulder he would have played in the Final.

As of this moment, Hayes isn't in the same conversation as Miller.

Agreed. The proposal was JT++ for Ryan as a deadline rental. I'm not giving up a player of his potential with 5-6 years of cost-controlled team control for 25 games of Bobby Ryan either. And I like Ryan.
