I don't think MacKinnon's going to have a huge break out this year he's got to learn how to be an NHL center he can have his massive breakout in year 3

Short Youtube clips are often deceiving in many ways, a pitfall of "scouting" little known players. People remember MacKinnon for his rush scoring chances but to me this shift represents why he could be one of the greats. It has nothing to do with his ability to produce on the rush, that can fade in time and be mitigated by defenses.

Here he shows quickness, vision, hands, determination, stamina, dexterity, prediction(very underrated and done by the greats). He's elusive, physical and unpredictable. This shift is why he could be among the top 10.

You will forget by the end, but he starts this shift carrying the puck 1 v 5 in to the offensive zone.

Apparently I don't understand how to embed YT vids here. But here's the URL. http://youtu.be/p6S8fKQy26M

Words can't describe how much I loved that shift. He just showed so much skill and vision and physical ability. A few of those little plays and shots he tried early didn't quite work, but the fact that he saw them and tried them, and then just kept getting better and better as the shift went on and the puck just kept coming to him because he didn't float out of the play, was just amazing to watch. He was like a man among boys out there toying with these seasoned vets as an 18 year old.

I'll always think of that as "the shift" for Nate.

Supposedly that shift sealed the Calder for him. There was a lot of media there at that game and I've heard a few people say they were all in awe up in the press box.

I saw Sakic take a similar shift to that in 1991, but I think MacKinnon actually showed more vision in that shift than Sakic did in his. Either way, like Roy (or was it Sakic?) said, I do expect him to become a premier player in the NHL.

Interesting. 3 of the 4guys voted MacK. The kid is going to be good, but not sure if I would put him above Duchene though. Not yet at least.

How is Pavelski not on the list? Not even HM? He and Krejci should have got votes before Sedin and Stall, IMO. Getzlaf and Seguin should be a good amount higher as well.

Even though it's for the 2014-15 season (so it's more of a projection) it's too optimistic.

I think it's stranger that he's ahead of Bäckström than Duchene.

Why is it so hard to believe that MacKinnon is already better than Duchene?

He had a better rookie season than Duchene, and I have little doubt that he'll have a better sophomore season than Duchene, and from then on I fully expect Mac to get to another level, like Stamkos etc...

As a hockey player? Duchene will be more complrte player at this point, but MacK might get as many points. Duchene is still better.

Because he is not.

You can't compare rookie seasons to determine who is better. MacK's rookie season represents how good he currently is because that season just happened. Duchene is years removed from his rookie season and has progressed and gotten better since then though. With Duchene you have to look at all his seasons, particularly this past one since that is the best representation of the here and now.

You can't use predicted success to determine who is better now. What is expected to happen, has not happened.

Duchene is better now, but I think MacKinnon will put it together faster. Duchene is a top-tier #1 center, whereas I see MacKinnon challenging for scoring titles by year 3.

@Mackinnon9 as maybe the most improved this yr? Not far-fetched. Word from Andy O'Brien summer camp: NMac is significantly bigger, stronger.

Nate looks a lot bigger to me actually. Look at some of his recent pics, he looks noticeably taller to me anyway.
