While I admire his determination, I hope Blackie is done. I just don’t believe he has a future in the NHL with 2 blockers and no glove.

With that said the NYR should do him a favor and cut him. It does nothing for the future of the NYR or HWP to have him taking a roster spot on either team.

In a draft you should always draft either BPA or draft in term of need.
If Montoya was the BPA then I can understand the pick but if he wasn´t, not only did we neglect to draft the BPA but also neglected to draft for need.

As you said, its to early to see who will turn out to be the better goaltender, Lundqvist or Montoya but at least we have Lundqvist "in the battle".
Which gives us better depth at the goaltending position than at other positions.
Hence, Montoya was not drafted because of need, that only leaves him being the BPA. If he was then fine, but if he wasn´t we made a bad pick.

It's been said a lot that they felt Montoya was the best player available.

Personally I think having two goalie prospects isn't a bad thing, especially considering that we don't know who will turn out better in the long term.

I can think of several wasted picks over the years with different talent on the board and I wouldn't even put Montoya on that level.

Fairly high picks in 2002 and 2003 come to mind for that category.

I think it's very easy to forget that Lunqvist is 23 and has a full 3 years of development on a higher level than Montoya.

Weekes is signed for two years, so I think generally over that time, Lundqvist will be given every opportunity to take the starting job...whether it's this year, or next year...

I tend to see him taking over a little more at the end of this year, but he's not going to be the clearcut #1. Going into next year I think will be his chance to really earn the #1 spot for sure.

and then after that, he'll probably be fighting with Montoya for a spot

Dan Blackburn is not taking up a roster spot on either the Rangers or Hartford. In fact,Dan does not even have a guaranteed deal-it's a tryout. In due time,Dan will retire and collect his insurance money. He just needs some more time

Hey, maybe Lundquist will get the start for the home opener against the Habs, since they play the night before in Philly....Imagine that experience for him.

I have thought about that too. I think he will get the start. In 03-04 we had Minnesota and Columbus back to back, and Markkanen started the second game, although the fact Dunham and the Blueshirts gave up 5 I think in the opener, Dunham would've probably rested the next nite anyway. I cannot predict whether we will win or lose, but I think Philly will have a pretty good number of shots on us, and Weekes is going to get worked.

That would be neat, Balej...

and I gather he'd be able to handle the pressure, with his international experience, but my guess is that he starts his first game in Washington, the fourth game of the season. But, that's without anybody seeing Lundqvist in any preseason games. I only guess this because Philly would just be unfair, and a home game would be viewed as too much, I believe, and the next game's in Jersey.
