Worst-case scenario, but what happens to the NHL draft if the 04/05 season is cancelled? Does the NHL have some kind of lottery to determine draft order? Cancel the draft too? Just curious about how the situation will be handled if anyone actually knows.

Not sure myself, but I think the fair thing would be to go off of this years stats.

Imagine Atlanta (Kovalchuk, Heatley, Lehtonen) or Florida (Luongo, Bouwmeester, etc) adding Ovechkin and Crosby to their already potent list of young guns. Talk about a good reason to finish poorly...that would be like winning the lottery !!

It's best not to think about it.

My bet is that they would go by the same standings finish as this season, but they would re-draw the lottery portion of it. So just because you drew the top pick in the 2004 draft, it wouldn't mean you'd just be given the same pick in 2005.

That makes the most sense at least.

2005 draft

I think it would be most fair to randomly draw the entire 2005 draft (you could do it once for the whole draft or for each seperate round).

Once the CBA has expired, there is no basis to conduct the draft in the first place. If a new CBA is not in place to have at least a partial season in 2004/05, the NHL will have much bigger problems than draft order.

I think they will put all the teams in a hat and which ever one they pick first get the first pick

I dunno. That would make it awful tempting to a team nearing the end of the year to tank the last few games once they are meaningless anyways if they can pick up both Ovechkin and Crosby by losing the last few?

Two potential superstars for a few tanked games would look awfully good to a GM trying to built a franchise...

I hope they get a CBA done and all this becomes moot..

There is no reason not to cancel the draft all together and have ovenchkin and crosby drafted in the same draft. Also it would deepen the draft pool. Giving everyone a top notch 1st rounder. And a great 2nd rounder.
