Bates Battaglia

Bates Battaglia is probably the last remaining UFA that can really help out a lot of teams. He's a good checking forward from what I know and he can score a few goals here and there.

Does anyone have any info as to what he's doing or what teams might be interested in him? I thought the Oilers or Senators would be on this guy cause I believe he can provide some grit too...

any news?

I don't think he can be conceivably as bad as he was on the Avs. he hit 20 goals a few years ago, i'm sure he could help out some team on the 3rd or 4th line.

Actually, he was even WORSE for Washington than he was for Colorado, if you can even fathom such a thing.

The guy's terrible, and I don't see how he can help any team.

He benefitted from Carolina's system.

I wanted Ottawa to sign him before, and still kind of do even after all the harsh words from Washington and Colorado fans. A few Capitals fans stumbled into the Sens forum and completely tore him apart saying he was always the worst player on the ice for Washington .... FOR WASHINGTON!

After that I kind of changed my tune about having him as a 4th line guy but I'd still like Ottawa to sign him to a 2-way contract and give him a chance to prove he's still got something left down on the farm team. I'll be surprised if anyone can seriously say he's SO BAD that he is not even a worthy injury call up from the farm.

The Oilers? They've been overstocked at LW for some time now. Smyth, Torres, Moreau take the first three lines, and Rita/Winchester/Harvey will be fighting for the fourth line spot.

When Washington chooses to sign Brian Willsie for another year and cut you loose...you know you've had a bad year.

He needs to sign in Carolina for the minimum and be done with it. He seemed completely unmotivated here in Colorado, more than a little lost. Maybe he can find his game again as a Cane.

Long time no-see, Av-American.

Canes can't use him, we actually have depth now on left wing for the first time since the team moved to NC.

Yea, the crack staff from Washington and their decision making is always a great barometer to go by. I particularly like their "Lets not sign more than 4 NHL caliber players" campaign they are currently running.

Without overpaying for players, how else are they going to get players to go there when they are clearly in their first full season of their rebuilding process? They signed a couple of stop gap players, and they signed a couple of young guys who might get a chance to play instead of being stuck in the AHL on their last teams. I can't knock them for that....better than signing nobody.

I gave this some thought. With all things said, the only thing Battaglia provides more than some young scrapper trying to break in is the fact he's a veteran player. <insert young player's name here> deserves more ice time than Battaglia does. At this point, if he wants to continue a NHL career he probably needs to add something to his game, or prove to everyone again he's Jon Bates Freaking Battaglia, NHLer. AHL or Europe bound? Who knows...

The big question is IF he would sign a two-way deal, if he would accept starting the season in the AHL with humilty, than he could make a valubale injury call-up at some point in the season for a team in the NHL.

Well, he played in the ECHL last year, did he not? So playing in the A would be a step up. Hopefully he gets an offer somewhere, pays his dues and catches on again.

With the turnover of players post-lockout, too many teams have younger players that they'd rather give a shot than someone marginal like Bates.

I don't think he's lazy though, just not a very skilled player. I don't see him catching on with anyone this year unless he earns it playing out of the AHL

I've heard that there are off-ice concerns. Just rumors, I don't know anything for a fact.
