Vanek will score more goals throughout his career so if that's an area that you really need, then i'd take Vanek. Otherswise, it's hard to turn down Malkin.
lol Clearly Malkin. Yes, sure, Vanek is a really good young talent, but I find he's been grossly overrated on these boards of late.
I agree.. Vanek has always been known to hockey fans as a great talent, there's no doubt in my mind that if he works hard, he could become a top 15(maybe 10?) 1st line NHLer. Ever since he scored those 3 goals or 2, whatever #s in PRESEASON, he's become so great, even getting compared to the #1 prospect in the WORLD; Sidney Crosby (though some may say Alex Ovechkin is the #1 prospect in the world).
Malkin... but at least with Vanek you won't ever have to worry he'll choose the RSL over the NHL.
As psyched as I am as a Sabres fan about Vanek, Malkin has the potential to be a better all-around player. However, the point made above by rmp is why I also choose Vanek. Plus, Vanek will be helping you this year, instead of waiting until next year so Malkin has a better chance of winning the Calder.
Vanek has done nothing to hurt his status and the guy could be a better player than Malkin. He could definitely be a 40 or 50 goal scorer. He has shot the lights out wherever he has played. But I doubt you will find too many people who pick him for a potential scoring champion and at this point at least, with his combination of scoring and playmaking, Malkin is looked at that way. There is no guarantee either will hit those heights and if you put them both in the NHL this year I might pick Vanek to be the higher scorer but the two year age difference is huge. Last year Malkin was scoring well in the RSL and at the same age Vanek was still playing College hockey. I am actually looking forward to seeing how Vanek and Ovechkin stack up against each other this year.
I am very high on Vanek and Malkin. However, I've never seen Malkin play and I've seen Vanek play 12-15 games. I can't really see one of these guys having a much better career than the other. They should both be successful.

This kind of thing has always confused me......how can someone be "very high on" a player without ever seeing him play?

By talking to people who have seen a player and reading about him on prospects sites like this one. I have seen Jiri Novotny play and other than highlights, I haven't seen Sidney Crosby play, yet I'm higher on Sid.
I really like Vanek and have never seen Malkin play, but basing my choice on what I have read about people who Have seen them play, I'd have to say that the consensus is that Malkin will be better. I'm a Sabres fan and very happy with the way Tommy V is progressing, so I'll cop out and say that they're both very good prospects.
Ask the so called people who take Ovechkin over Crosby...who I'm sure almost all of them haven't seen Ovechkin play more then 2 games.
It's probably the other way around, actually. Many of those who think Ovechkin will turn out better than Crosby are Russian, so I'm sure they've seen him play. When you watch, or even follow a certain prospect, and familiarize yourself with his accomplishments, skills, etc., it's easy to place him above another player you might not know as much about/have as much interest in.

yea but professional scouts not biased russian fans, are touting Crosby as one of the best prospects since Lemiuex. Not Ovechkin. At this point, I trust the scouts alot more. And it speaks for itself too, by the way they play.
oh Malkin in a heartbeat. Its nuts judging a rookie by the amount of pre season games they played? 3??? OMG.

I was talking about fans arguing about prospects, not scouts.
