Knew it was coming, but it's still sad.

Man is that ever sad. The guy had the potential to be one of the top goalies in the league a while down the road. I hate seeing young players have to quit what they love doing because of injuries.

It's really too bad--Blackburn/DiPietro looked like a rivalry that would be fun to watch for years.

Agreed but throwing Lundqvist in there will be just as fun

I was digging through old THN copies for the 2001 draft preview so I could post info on a few of the players in that draft who are now with the Blues, and I saw Blackburn listed there and all I could think was, "What if......?"

I've been following him for awhile. It's horrible that he had to retire. I want to know what he's going to do now for a living.

The worst part is that he wasn't even injured during a game - it was a freak injury during off-season training. I agree - it's sad to see a young guy's career end through no fault of his own.

Too bad, he was one heck of a player, I remember his first game in Montreal(wasnt he born here), he was still very young and he put on a real show. He basically stole the spotlight the whole night. He had some serious talent.

I don't remember Nurminen getting this much sympathy when he was forced to retire.

What EXACTLY is your point?

Pity those who are incapable of leaving well enough alone.

Well, Nurminen earned some money already. I don't think Blackburn is millionair.

Same here. I followed him when he started out with the Kooteney Ice, and he out played a Calgary Hitman / Calgary Flame No 1 pick goaltender Brent Krahn. I remember he was still there at No 10, and I was sitting around praying NY wouldn't pick him since the Flames were next at 11.

He is now. The reason he retired instead of further attempting a comeback was to collect on a insurance claim that I believe was worth around 6mil. Not nearly as much as he would have made had he been able to continue his career, but it's a good starting point. I assume he's gonna go back to school now. I wish Danny all the best.

He's not that great of baseball player (I played against him) but I diagress...

I bet he returns to the NHL. one day.Rangers situation is just a horrible situation to be in for a goaltender not to mention other positions Good luck Al ,your going to need it.

best of luck in his next career because even if you're a backup goaltender in the NHL you are still set for life. it's unfortunate that he had to retire so soon and under these circumstances.

baseball ?

And he will not return some day... If it was up to Dan that someday would be tomorrow.. but he can't.
he retired.
It's not always final, but in this case I'm pretty sure he's not coming out of his retirement.

If he comes out of retirement, he has to give back the money.
