Big shoes to fill: Rangers give 'C' to Kasparaitis
Jaromir Jagr said he didn't think he should be captain. So, the New York Rangers went in a different direction.
After Darius Kasparaitis and his $3.4 million salary were kept on by the Rangers, the team on Sunday announced that Kasparaitis would also serve as team captain.
"I played with a lot of guys in this room," Kasparaitis told reporters Sunday. "And with the younger guys I worked out in the summer. And the Russian guys they know me from over there. I'm kind of a man of the world.
"It would be such a great honor and such a big responsibility being the captain of the New York Rangers," Kasparaitis added. "I don't think there's anywhere else that you can compare that. Especially going after Mark Messier, it's going to be tough and a lot of pressure."
After Messier announced his retirement last month, Jaromir Jagr told reporters that he didn't think he'd want to be captain.
Said Jagr at the time: "I don't think I will be the captain. Because you have to speak to the fans, in my opinion, it's a lot easier for a North American guy who speaks fluently in English. I wouldn't mind if the New York Rangers were in Czech (Republic)."
My choice was Kaspairitis. Though he is the first non North American Captain of the Rangers and not a prototypical choice of what a New York Ranger captain should be (ie. Messier), i think he deserves it for what he has shown throughout the summer working with the kids, his dedication and his mature approach to the game. He really wants to be a ranger and is proud, so good for him. Who wouldve thought when the Rangers got him, he would be a captain. Will he feel the added pressure? Will his level of play or approach change? Will be interesting to see...
Good Luck to Kaspar the Captain. Lets go Rangers!
I LOVE this choice..mainly because he WANTS to be here. He had steped up big time in helping the Rangers and I believe he will raise his game and lead by example. I don't know if Jagr's heart is totally here as he wants to contend for a Stanley Cup again and it probably won't happen here. I expect Jagr to be traded this year. It will be best for the Rangers and Jagr.
It seemed to come down to between him and Rucchin. It's not a bad choice considering the vets we had to choose from. I think I would have preferred Rucchin but Steve has yet to make his debut as a Ranger. To be honest however whoever
wound up with it I think it will be up for grabs again in the near future.
Great choice, and not just becasue it was my choice also...He bridges the entire locker room the way he can hang with the vets and the way he was actively being a mentor for the kids...Also well respected by the opposition and the Refs...
I like the selection a lot. As was said above, Darius wants to be here. He seems to enjoy working with the kids, which is important for us at this stage. I think he'll be a great model for our two young Russian bluelines, 'Drats and Tyutin. As for him being Euro, its not like the guy is fresh off the boat. He's been in the league a decade and probably knows his way around NY better than some of the North Americans we've got.
Kasper to be Captain, Good for him. He was my choice. He said he really wants to be here, he is a vet, and he has shown that he can deal with the kids, the refs and the fans. Hopefully he can lead by example.
for once the Rangers go with a GUTSY move. The stupid and Sather-like move would have been Jagr...Sather has always preferred a big lazy star like Jagr!
Yet,probably with some of Renney's presuasion, they went with the RIGHT choice. Kasparaitis doesnt score goals, is not flashy...but he is what a Captain SHOULD BE...tough, hard-working, leads by example, stands up for his TEAM!
If it had to be anybody else than Jed, I'm glad it's Kaspar. He's a real team guy and get's along with everyone. Hard woking, sense of humor and fun. He's what the Rangers have been missing for a long time.
