Agreed. I must admit I am a bit disappointed and expected more from him this season.

But an average McDonagh is still a very very good player.

Very much hoping that this week off will do wonders for him and he will return rejuvenated and ready to go.

Don't know why, he sucks this year. Hopefully he starts playing well after the all star break.

Sucks is a strong word, but not as good as he has been.

Maybe the opinions of NHL coaches might make some doubt their viewpoints a bit and think they might not know everything.

They realize that he's constantly paired with Girardi who isn't exactly a great dman.....

All in all, Mac is an elite hockey player.

But, he tends to be inconsistent at times. Occasionally bursting into some offensive streaks, although showing elite defending, but there are times some of his decisions can be questionable on the ice.

This all comes down to the elephant in the room the Rangers (and the fans) have been over looking, the problem is the lack of having an extraordinary leader. Of course, Mac is the captain and a great one, and Marty, among others, are huge influences in the locker. But, I'm talking about our Mess, Sakic, Mario, Yzerman. I'm starting to think we'd been better off and more successful keeping Cally.... But, time will tell..

Cally was a Mess, Sakic, Mario, Yzerman type leader? The guy busted his ass on the ice, nothing about him screams Mess as a leader though.

If we won the cup last year St. Louis, MacDonagh, and maybe even Richards gets dubbed as that "extraordinary" leader. It's all a bunch of media hype storytelling. Who is that leader on the Kings? Doughty? You really think he brings more in that category than our guys? Those types of narratives are ridiculous. History is written by the victor.

And even if that's true I'm not sure I can name more than a handful of leaders in the league more extraordinary than Hank.

^This ^This ^This

Henrik Lundqvist is our franchise.

Note: I think the leader of the Kings is Duston Brown, and he's been their captain since 2008.

I'm more or less concerned about McDonagh not being an NHL player lately more than this faux leadership poppycock

Well this seems like a severe dramatization of what is actually occurring.

He's been poor. But poor for Ryan McDonagh is still an above average defenseman.

One has to wonder if the miles are starting to catch up to some of these guys

I'd be very concerened about that considering McDonagh is only 25 and we're just halfway through the season.

Lots of minutes played last year. Shoulder injury last year and this year. He may not be 100% right now

There was no reason for him to play hurt starting this season. If it took half a season for him to fully recover it should have been done then, especially considering the first 20 games were a **** show either way.

He's looked "not 100%" all year round, so I'm concerned he may be just making it worse.

One has to wonder how much, if any, is it the weight of wearing the C.

Doesn't look like anything physically wrong with McDonagh as was clearly the case in the early part of last year's playoffs. He's just struggling and making bad decisions.

We are not taking advantage of his offensive skills like we did last season. When we go on win streaks we ignore some issues that we should fix.

Hes turned pucks over, made dumb pinches and is just not playing smart. He reads a ton of plays wrong and often makes the wrong decision. People **** on G, but hes trying to cover McDonagh's ass half of the times people complain about a goal against.

Or not. I have always maintained that Brian Leetch was a better player without the C than with.

McD needs to right the ship defensively, and then hopefully the offense will follow once he gets that sorted out. He's not poised with the puck like he usually is and is having trouble moving the puck up the ice. It also seems like he's been on the ice for a substantial amount of goals lately, and his substandard positional play and decisionmaking have contributed to those pucks ending up in the back of the net.
